Raz-Kids Reading Program is up and running!

Our Grade 1 TLC Homework will now include the Raz-Kids online reading program. Students can access their Raz-Kids account by going to the website: https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login and typing in my teacher username: hmunday

Your child's account username has 2 letters and 2 numbers. The letters represent the first letter of your child's first name, and the first letter of your child's last name. The numbers represent the child's grade (01). For example, if the student's name is Heather Munday, their username would be: HM01

Your child's password is the same password they use to log on to D2L.

Check the weekly homework for details on how many books your child is expected to read each week (the amount may change). Once they log on to Raz-Kids, they click on "Reading Room" and there they will find the online books to read.

Once your child has read the book with the sound, they have a chance to read it again without the sound. Then there is a question mark where they will take the quiz to test their comprehension of the story:

If you have any questions about Raz-Kids, please feel free to contact your child's teacher through the Blue Communication folder, or via email.

Thank-you for your support with our online reading program!

Orange Shirt Day

Students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt on Monday, September 30th. TLC students are encouraged to either wear an orange shirt (and any pants) OR their formal uniform.

"Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) Residential School (1891-1981) Commemoration Project and Reunion events that took place in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in May 2013... The events were designed to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation... Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of this project. As spokesperson for the Reunion group leading up to the events, former student Phyllis (Jack) Webstad told her story of her first day at residential school when her shiny new orange shirt, bought by her grandmother, was taken from her as a six-year old girl.

The annual Orange Shirt Day on September 30th opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind.  A discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation.  A day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected.  Every Child Matters, even if they are an adult, from now on.

The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come."

For more information about Orange Shirt Day, visit: http://www.orangeshirtday.org/

OPEN HOUSE

On Thursday we have our Open House! Families and students are welcome to join us for CJM's Open House Thursday, September 19 from 4-7:15pm. It is a time for you to see your child's classroom, the Learning Commons, gym, and music room! Students will be dismissed at 12pm tomorrow (Thursday), as it is a half day. TLC students must be in uniform during the school day (9:10-12:00). See you at Open House!

** Homework is due on Thursday (Sept. 19th)! **

NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 :) See you on Monday!

Homework

Please help your child login to D2L: https://d2l.cbe.ab.ca/d2l/loginh/  Their username (student ID) and password, will be glued into their Homework notebooks, which will all be sent home Monday to be ready for the first week of homework starting Monday evening. The homework will be found on the D2L website by Monday once students are able to login. :)

Terry Fox Run

Our Terry Fox run will be this Friday, September 13th. Students are invited to wear casual clothing rather than their TLC uniforms for this day. If your child has CJM merchandise (a hooded sweatshirt or T-shirt), they are encouraged to wear that! Otherwise, casual wear is perfectly fine for this event. Money donations will be collected all throughout this week for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Shoes, shoes, shoes!

In TLC, students have three pairs of shoes at school: their outdoor shoes they come to school in, their gym shoes, and their black, polishable TLC indoor shoes. Our TLC uniform requirements ask that students wear black dress shoes with their uniform. Please see picture of a couple of examples. Please write your child's name on their gym shoes and dress shoes. Gym will be starting this week! Shoes with velcro are recommended, unless students are able to tie their own shoes. :)

Snack & Lunch

In our school day in grade 1, we provide two opportunities for students to have snack time: the first is mid-morning before lunch and the second is mid-afternoon after lunch. We try to encourage students to eat one healthy snack during morning snack (10:15), their lunch and any juice at lunch time (12:00-12:24), and their final snack (or the rest of their uneaten lunch, if any), during afternoon snack (around 2:30). On Fridays, we have early dismissal (9:10am-1:00pm). Please pack snacks for your child on Fridays. We will still have snack time (maybe two) on Fridays. Grade 1 students are at school for a long time compared to kindergarten. We want to make sure our students aren't hungry and are ready to learn during all parts of the day. :)

More lunch information:

  • Lunch is from 12:00 – 12:48pm.
  • Grades 1-3 are eating in the gym from 12:00 – 12:24pm then they head outside until 12:48pm.
  • Grades 4-6 are outside from 12:00 – 12:24pm then they head inside to the gym to eat until 12:48pm
  • While students are eating lunch, they are supervised by Lunchroom Supervisors in the gym.
  • Students bring their lunch bag (and water bottle, if they have one) to the gym for lunch and place it in their homeroom baskets after they are done eating (located beside them in the gym). To avoid lost lunch bags, please write your child's name on their lunch kit (and water bottle).

Blue Communication Folder

Your child has been given a blue folder for the school year. This folder is a great way to communicate with me! We will do our best to send this folder to and from school every day. If there is anything inside from me or the school, please take it out and keep it at home, or sign and return, depending on what it is. If your child brings me their folder with a note from their parent, I will do my best to respond and send it back the same day. If the folder is empty, then I know there is no note from home. This folder will also be a way of bringing homework to and from school. Stay tuned for weekly homework. We will normally send homework on Mondays and it will be due on Fridays.
