One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council. Under the Education Act, a school council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school. You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.

May 2021

Please take a moment to complete the School Council year end survey. You may remember that we issued a similar survey in the Fall. This follow-up survey  will give us a sense of how our programs and initiatives met your needs and interests this year and will help us set our priorities for the 2021/22 school year.  As a Council our mandate is to support your involvement in the school community and act in an advisory role in matters that enhance student learning. We hope to hear from you on how our programs and funds can best serve the Chinook Park School community.

The survey will remain open until June 4 and we will present the results at the School Council AGM.

November Message to Parents from Chinook Park’s School Council Executive

Dear Parents,

Wishing you well on this Remembrance Day, which gives us an opportunity to pause and honour the  men and women who have served and continue to serve in our Armed Forces, as well as to reflect on difficult times in our past that affected everyone across the country and around the world.

There can be no doubt we are in another difficult time, brought on by COVID-19 and the rising case count in our Province and school community. The Chinook Park School Council Executive wanted to take this moment to share our understanding on how this is being addressed by the School.

We recognize that there is so much information available regarding COVID-19 that it can be hard to identify the most current and relevant resources. In an effort to help you sort through all of the information, we wanted to point you to a few helpful official resources.

Next School Council Meeting

We encourage you to register for the next virtual School Council meeting on November 18 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Among other topics, this meeting will include an update from the School Administration on the current status of COVID cases in Chinook Park School as well as the School’s process for communicating cases to the school community.

Click here to join the meeting

Please send us any questions you have for Aliki and Dawn via email: chinookparkchair@gmail.com

Agenda (90 min):

  • Current status of COVID-19 cases in the school, how it will communicate with parents on COVID cases in school, and how to interpret those messages (20 min)
  • Results from Parent Survey and a discussion on how to improve communication and parent engagement going forward (20 min)
  • Proposal from School Council on initial spending plan in response to school needs and how we propose to prioritize our resources. Motion to approve expenditures. (20 min)
  • Administration to share the tentative 2020-21 School Development Plan (10 min)
  • D2L 101 – Getting onto the Online Education Platform (10 min)
  • Close and action items (10 min)

Finally, a reminder that the best way to keep our kids and teachers healthy and our school open is to follow all public health guidance. Dr Hinshaw has indicated that the incidence of COVID transfer within schools is very low. The vast majority of cases reported in schools are as a result of transmission outside the school setting. So please, wear your masks, wash your hands and reduce your social interactions as much as possible. Let’s keep our kids and teachers safe and in school.

On behalf of the Council

Dear Parents & Guardians,

On behalf of your Chinook Park School Council & Association, welcome to the 2020-21 school year. With the first month and a half under our belt everyone seems to be adjusting to a new reality and there are plenty of smiles in the school yard to prove it!

Thank you to the many of you who joined us on Zoom for our first parent-council meeting and Annual General Meeting on September 16. We had an open discussion with school administration about plans for the coming year, and shared concerns and generated ideas together. We also elected our new School Council & Association Executive. Please bookmark our website for up to date information, contacts and schedule of upcoming meetings and events.

The elected School Council is here to represent you. Our #1 priority for the coming year is to work with administration to keep our school safe and open. A big part of that is hearing from parents and guardians about your concerns and interests. Our Vice-Chair Katie McKinnon will be focused on gathering input from you, and looking for ways for us to connect as a community. She has developed a short survey to start this off. Please follow this link to complete the survey online. It will take less than 10 minutes of your time. The survey will remain open until October 23. We promise to report back!

Meanwhile, if you are looking to get more involved we have options:

  1. Classroom volunteering: please contact your child’s teacher directly. There may be some things you can do from home to support in-classroom learning.
  2. School-wide volunteering: please contact our Volunteer Co-Coordinators Lindsey Stene at linzappa@yahoo.ca or Natalie Harmon at nharmon17@icloud.com to join our volunteer team and hear about upcoming opportunities.
  3. Council activity: please contact Alison or Jason at chinookparkchair@gmail.com with any questions about Council or Association activities.

We look forward to hearing more from you. Please mark your calendar for the next parent-council meeting on Wednesday, October 21 at 6:30pm on Zoom. Register here

School Council Welcome and AGM Invite

On behalf of Chinook Park School Council Executive welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! It's been an unusual start but we trust that with a little patience, empathy and enthusiasm we will be able to help our students and families have a healthy, enriching and engaging year.

As parents and guardians of students at Chinook Park School you are ALL members of the School Council and are encouraged to attend our monthly meetings which will be held virtually this year.  The more involvement we have, the better we can serve the best interests of the school and its students.  Our first meeting of the year will be Wednesday September 16, 2020 at 6:30pm-8:00pm via Zoom. Principal Aliki Avdicos and Assistant Principal Dawn Poole will present information about school organization, covid protocols and answer questions. We will also hold our Annual General Meeting, which we promise will be brief. Please mark your calendars!
