Recycling at Our School

As of Nov. 1, 2017 all businesses, including schools, must include compostable materials recycling as part of their recycling program. At Chris Akkerman, we have put new practices in place to meet these new requirements. We will have containers to collect small compostable materials such as banana and orange peels, apple cores, and other organic material. Non-recyclable material will continue to come home in your child’s lunch kit.

Due to the large amount of compostable material on Fun Lunch days, we will be sending home pizza boxes with your child. It is very helpful in our efforts to reduce our waste at our school that we continue to practice litter-less lunches. We appreciate your continued support with our schools recycling program.

Snacks Tips for Parents

Since children have smaller stomachs than adults and need to eat every 3 to 4 hours, snacking is a good way for them to get the extra nutrients and energy they need. Try to include 2 or more food groups in a snack to make it high in nutrients. Try these great ideas:

  • Fresh fruit and crackers
  • Fruit yogurt topped with cereal; animal crackers and milk
  • Celery sticks with cheese spread and raisins
  • Sunflower seeds and juice
