Principal's Message

2022-2023 Welcome Back Message

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year at Clarence Sansom School!
We are very excited to have new and returning Scorpions join us for a great year of learning in the 2022/23 school year! Please take time to read the information below so everyone starts the year successfully.
This Week
Sansom staff are busy getting ready to welcome students from Monday through Wednesday.
School begins for our grade 7, ALP, ACCESS and new-to-Sansom students on Thursday, September 1 at 8:30 am. Grade 8 and 9 students who are new to Sansom will be dismissed at 10:30 am on this day, but all others (Grade 7, ACCESS and ALP students) will remain until the end of the day (see school start/end times below). There will be a hot dog lunch provided for our grade 7, ALP, ACCESS and new to Sansom students. We ask all students to enter the school through the main doors and head directly to the gym (staff will help to direct students).
Homeroom teachers of grade 8 and 9 students will contact families prior to their first day of classes (Friday, September 2, 2022) to welcome them to their class. Student schedules can be viewed via the PowerSchool portal on Thursday, September 1, 2022. Please note, we are not accepting student class/homeroom change requests at this time.
Friday, September 2, 2022, is a regular school day for all our students (8:30 am to 12:29 pm). Students may enter the building through any of the supervised entrances: main, north, and east doors.

Student Health & Attendance
One of the most welcome phrases that we have seen multiple times in preparation for our students returning is “typical school year". Although we have learned that things can change, there is no updated guidance from either Alberta Health or Alberta Education relative to COVID-19 protocols at this time. All student illnesses should be treated like in typical school years. We continue to encourage general health measures for all students and staff to reduce the risk of transmission of illnesses; these include such things as staying home when sick, hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. If your child will be absent from school, please ensure you call the office to report it.
Student Forms
Each year, schools have a variety of forms that parents/legal guardians are required to complete, review and update, some of which are paper, and others are online. In the CBE, the forms in an online format (SchoolEngage) are:
Demographic Verification - 2022-23 – This form includes your child's personal information as well as parent / legal guardian contact information.
Citizenship Information Update - 2022-23 – This form becomes available if you change your child's citizenship information on the Demographic Verification form.
Annual Authorization - 2022-23 – This form provides consent for school and district use of personal information.
SchoolEngage is one of the applications found in your MyCBE account. This is the same account that you use to pay fees, view academic information, book school conferences, etc.If you do not have a MyCBE account, on the MyCBE page click on Create a MyCBE Account. For online help refer, to MyCBE - Creating an Account (Includes instructions and a video). Online forms must be completed thought School Engage. To complete these forms:
Sign in to your MyCBE account
Click on the SchoolEngage icon
Select the form
Complete or review and update the form
Click on Submit to send the form electronically to the school
Repeat steps 3-5 for each form
Paper forms will be provided to students by September 6, 2022, and all forms must be completed by Friday September 9, 2022.
Fees and Waivers
School fees will be charged to families starting in October. Online fee payment is the simplest and most convenient way to pay school fees. Parents can use their online account to pay fees or apply for a waiver at: http://www.cbe.ab.ca/mycbe.
You can find more information on the CBE school fees and waivers  page.
Important Dates
We follow the CBE traditional calendar. The calendar follows common start and end days, non-instructional days and holidays. Our 2022-2023 school specific calendar can be found here.
Attendance/Late Arrivals
Attendance and punctuality are essential in setting up your children for long-term success and planning. Please ensure students arrive at school BEFORE 8:25 am so instruction can begin promptly at 8:30! Students may leave campus at lunch; however, we strongly encourage students to remain at the school to avoid problems in the community and coming back to school late. Our cafeteria will be open and ready for business mid September. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
New Attendance Code
As part of CBE's commitment to “acknowledge and support the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action" (CBE Education Plan, 2021-24), a new attendance code has been introduced for the 2022/2023 school year. The new Cultural-Spiritual-Ceremonial (CSC) attendance code offers an excused absence from school to recognize and support Indigenous cultural revitalization for CBE students who self-identify as Indigenous, and their families. Many Indigenous students and families rely on their Indigenous culture, spirituality, and ceremony to support their health and well-being. This includes the right to traditional hunting and gathering experiences.
While the CBE has introduced the CSC code as an act of reconciliation, the code can be accessed for all students and is intended to support participation in cultural, spiritual or ceremonial events. CBE recognizes that these activities may not be considered by many families as a Religious Holiday (RH), and the inclusion of the CSC code will allow for a more inclusive response to reporting these absences. The RH code will remain available when this more appropriately captures the reason for absence.
We look forward to working with you and your children for an exciting year full of learning. Should you have any questions please contact the office directly.
