Traffic Safety

Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near our schools, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

Parking & Drop-Off

Student Drop Off

With the weather being colder and the driving conditions affecting our bussing times, we know that many more families are choosing to drive their student(s) to school. In order to ensure the safety of all of our students we ask you to please follow the below requests:

Do not stop or park on the school side of Northmount Drive. This whole stretch of road is our bussing zone and we need to ensure that our busses have room to safely pull over to let students out. You may use Terry or Trafford Drive, or the west side of Northmount Drive to stop and park your vehicle.

Be aware that many students and families are crossing Northmount Drive. Please follow the rules of the road.

There is a lighted crosswalk on Northmount Drive that we ask all families to use when crossing this road.

If you are running late, please accompany your student to the Main doors of the school to ensure that your child has entered the building. After 9:08 the Grade Level Entry Doors are closed.

Thank you for your support to keep all of our students safe when arriving at school.

Drop Off and Safety for all

Please drop off and pick up your children along the right passenger side of Terry Road or along the right passenger side on Thornhill Drive. There are 4 openings along these fences. These roadways give you a good place to view your children going right to their designated doors. Please drop off your children any time after 8:55 but not after 9:05. Students should proceed directly to their entry doors. Teachers will welcome students at their designated doors from 8:55 – 9:05.

We would like to remind  parents and those who are picking up and dropping of children that the safety of all families and staff is of the utmost importance around our school and in school bus pick and drop off zones in your communities. Children do not perceive traffic like adults do -   adults need to show extra caution.  We are reaching out to our families in the interests of safety and good citizenship. We have had several worrisome situations in and around our school and in school pick up and drop off zones.  Please remember to let your children out on the side closest to the sidewalk; not out into traffic. Your children are learning from your actions. Please choose safety over convenience and the need to hurry.

Please pay attention to the following reminders and bylaws that are upheld to keep everyone safe:

Do not park:

  • in or within 5 meters of a cross walk
  • in a City of Calgary Bus Zone
  • in or within 1.5 meters of a driveway, garage

When driving through a school zone:

  • the maximum speed is 30 km/hr from 7:30 AM until 9:00 PM on all school days.

When crossing the street, use the cross walk, and the point, pause, proceed method.

U-turns are not permitted:

  • at an intersection with traffic lights or in the middle of a road or alley between intersections

We have reached out to the Calgary Police Service for support during drop off and pick up times. We encourage all parents to file a complaint with the Calgary Police Service to help keep our children safe.

Together we all contribute to the safety and well being of our community.

Those parents or guardians who choose to drop off and/or pick up their children are advised to use Terry Road and Thornhill Drive. Guests and staff usually park on Trafford Road. There are 4 gates that allow for a safe entrance into the school yard. Teachers wearing bright safety vests begin supervision at 8:55 am.

Pick Up

At 3:43 pm dismissal, all students exit through their designated exit. Please support your children by telling them where you will pick them up. Parents are welcome to meet their children at these exits if their children are not taking the school bus or they have signed their child off the bus. It is very important that your child is met at the entrance promptly. They worry quite quickly and will be brought in to the office to call home should they not meet their parent or guardian immediately. All students who are not taking the bus are asked to meet their parents outside these exits at the end of the school day.

Exit Doors

Grade 1 – East Compound Doors (outside the boys’ washroom)
Grade 2 – West Compound Doors (outside the girls’ washroom)
Grade 3 – East Wing Doors (close to the playground)
Grade 4 – West Wing Doors (close to Northmount Drive)
