Important Information: Winter Celebration

November 17, 2023

Dear Copperfield School Families,

We are very excited to be hosting our Copperfield Winter Celebration in December.  Our students in grades 1-5 will perform on either December 13 or 14, and our kindergarten students will perform on December 20, 2023.  The winter celebration is an opportunity for our community to gather and most importantly for students to showcase their learning.  [...]

Principals Message 11/01/2023

We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. Lest We Forget! On November 8, our Grade 5 students will be hosting Copperfield's Remembrance Day Assembly in the gym at 10:30am. By remembering, we pay tribute to members of the Canadian Armed Forces who served to defend our values and freedoms. We will take time to pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict, and peace. Announcements highlighting information about veterans and their sacrifices, the significance of the poppy, and ways in which Canadians can support Veterans will been shared with our students leading up to our assembly. Students will learn about the significance of Remembrance Day and will demonstrate their learning through art, song, poetry, and writing. As part of this very sombre and important assembly, students who participate in a Service Club (Cadets, Cubs, Scouts, Girl Guides, Sparks) are invited to wear their uniform on Wednesday November 8, 2023.

November 8, 2023, is Indigenous Veterans Day and is meant to observe the significant past and present contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in service to the Canadian Armed Forces. It is estimated that over 12,000 First Nation People, Métis, Inuit men and women served. It was not until 1995 that Indigenous veterans were allowed to lay a wreath at the National War Memorial to honour the fallen. Indigenous Veterans Day started in Winnipeg on November 8, 1994, to recognize the importance of Indigenous Veterans and First Nation communities' contributions. While some men and women enlisted in the military, First Nation communities around Canada donated money, food, and materials as well as provided land for airports and defence installations.

Every year, The Royal Canadian Legion and their many volunteers conduct the Poppy Campaign to raise funds in support of Veterans and their families. As part of our Copperfield School Remembrance Day Assembly each student will be provided a poppy to wear. Poppies are distributed freely, but your generous donations are invaluable. To donate you can send money with your child on November 8 and the donations will be collected prior to the assembly by our Grade 5's.
Copperfield has heart!
