Principals Message 11/01/2023

We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. Lest We Forget! On November 8, our Grade 5 students will be hosting Copperfield's Remembrance Day Assembly in the gym at 10:30am. By remembering, we pay tribute to members of the Canadian Armed Forces who served to defend our values and freedoms. We will take time to pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict, and peace. Announcements highlighting information about veterans and their sacrifices, the significance of the poppy, and ways in which Canadians can support Veterans will been shared with our students leading up to our assembly. Students will learn about the significance of Remembrance Day and will demonstrate their learning through art, song, poetry, and writing. As part of this very sombre and important assembly, students who participate in a Service Club (Cadets, Cubs, Scouts, Girl Guides, Sparks) are invited to wear their uniform on Wednesday November 8, 2023.

November 8, 2023, is Indigenous Veterans Day and is meant to observe the significant past and present contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in service to the Canadian Armed Forces. It is estimated that over 12,000 First Nation People, Métis, Inuit men and women served. It was not until 1995 that Indigenous veterans were allowed to lay a wreath at the National War Memorial to honour the fallen. Indigenous Veterans Day started in Winnipeg on November 8, 1994, to recognize the importance of Indigenous Veterans and First Nation communities' contributions. While some men and women enlisted in the military, First Nation communities around Canada donated money, food, and materials as well as provided land for airports and defence installations.

Every year, The Royal Canadian Legion and their many volunteers conduct the Poppy Campaign to raise funds in support of Veterans and their families. As part of our Copperfield School Remembrance Day Assembly each student will be provided a poppy to wear. Poppies are distributed freely, but your generous donations are invaluable. To donate you can send money with your child on November 8 and the donations will be collected prior to the assembly by our Grade 5's.

Principal's Report October 18, 2023

We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School.  We finished last week with a very exciting community building assembly, which celebrated the generosity of Copperfield School.  Copperfield students raised an incredible $2450.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation.  This meant that 9 teachers honoured their agreement and received a whip cream pie in the face.  It was a great opportunity for all of us to laugh, have some fun and come together for a good cause.

At Copperfield School one of our greatest priorities is ensuring that all our students arrive safely to school.  Please report all late and/or absent students.  Send emails to copperfield@cbe.ab.ca or call our attendance line at 403-817-3512 extension 1 to leave a message. If your child will be away for several days for any reason, emailing or calling the school with dates for an extended absence is required.  When a student is away on extended leave of two weeks or more, an Extended Absence Form must be completed by a legal guardian.

Please join us!  Copperfield School Council welcomes all members of Copperfield School who are interested in learning more about school activities, supporting student learning and collaborating with a great group of council members.  We will be having our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, October 25 at 6:30pm.

Copperfield has heart!

Sincerely,

Update

We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. Thank you to our grade 2 students and staff for their commitment to learning, teaching and guidance throughout last week as Copperfield prepared for the Terry Fox Run.  Students shared announcements all week, hosted an assembly that brought our community together, encouraged all of us to set goals and to persevere when things get hard, and guided us through our run around Wildflower Pond. As a school community, we ran to support the Marathon of Hope by raising awareness and donations to support cancer research. Our Copperfield school community was incredibly generous and collectively we raised just over $2400.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation. This means that seven staff members will honour their agreement and get pied in the face at our final Terry Fox assembly on Friday October 13 at 10:45am.

Thank you to the many volunteers that have supported all the student activities thus far. We have seen volunteers supporting field trips; volunteers were instrumental in ensuring the safety of everyone throughout the Terry Fox Run and the Fun Lunch was a hit with all students who participated because of our well-organized volunteers. Thank you for your incredible dedication and time.

With the incredible weather we have been having it is hard to believe it is Fall. However, we know that Fall weather is approaching, and students need to be prepared for changing weather. Please ensure your child is dressed in layers to support the outdoor learning and recess opportunities we offer each day.  This is a great time to remind all students to swing by the lost and found to find those items they left outdoors during a warm lunch break.

Copperfield has heart!

Sincerely,

Principals Message 10/05/2023

We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. I was extremely proud of the learning that took place last week as we continue to educate ourselves through Truth and Reconciliation. Students engaged in many learning tasks within their classrooms that focused on the land acknowledgement, understanding residential schools through story and student presentations, listening to Indigenous leaders share experiences and teachings around treaties and the fall equinox. Our week culminated with an assembly hosted by the grade 4 team of students, staff, and Ms. Bohan, honouring those impacted by residential schools. It was a privilege to wear orange on Orange Shirt Day, it encouraged reflection and understanding through education, and our community was strengthened.

Copperfield student leadership and engagement continues this week as we look to learn more about Terry Fox and his goal to unite Canada in order to support cancer research. Our grade 2 students will be sharing announcements throughout the week and will be hosting an assembly at 8:45am on Friday October 6, 2023. As a school community, we will be running to support the Marathon of Hope and working to learn more about perseverance and goal setting. Terry Fox asked all Canadians to contribute one dollar to support Cancer Research, and Copperfield school has set a goal of raising $1200.00 to support the Terry Fox Foundation. Copperfield staff have added extra incentive by agreeing to get a pie in the face if we reach certain goals along the way to $1200.00.

Principals Message 9/27/2023

We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield school. It was wonderful to meet with families during school conferences last week. September conferences allow for families to establish a connection with teachers and to form learning goals and routines for the year. I was excited to welcome families back into our school building and to share our amazing learning spaces with everyone. Thank you to everyone who visited the book fair during conferences, the books purchased helped to raise $1750.00 in new books for our Learning Commons.

This week we have focused our learning on Truth and Reconciliation. Students learned about the significance of the Land Acknowledgment during an assembly on Monday. Mr. Patry was able to share his experiences growing up on Treaty 7 land, and he discussed the significance of the Land Acknowledgement with students. Students used the CBE Land Acknowledgement to better understand the importance of connecting to the natural spaces around us. Classrooms also examined Indigenous artists and authors to learn about Indigenous ways of knowing and doing through various art forms. We discussed the story of Phyllis Webstad and her experience with residential schools within our grade groups. This learning focused on the history; Truth & Reconciliation; Healing and Well-Being around Residential Schools. In recognition of Orange Shirt Day, staff and students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt on Thursday September 28, 2023.  Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity to remember and honour residential school survivors, and those whose lives were changed forever.

Copperfield has heart!

Sincerely,

Principal's Report June 28

We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield school. June is National Indigenous History Month. In addition to the inclusion of Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing and knowing in and through our work throughout the school year, National Indigenous Peoples Day is honoured annually on June 21, and also marks the beginning of summer solstice. In Indigenous communities, summer solstice signifies a time of renewal and ceremonies which are connected to the seasons, land, and spirituality.  National Indigenous Peoples Day is for all Canadians to recognize the diverse cultures and acknowledge Indigenous Peoples contributions, both historical and contemporary.

In an act of kinship and reciprocity, the CBE has gifted each school with a Treaty 7, Métis Nation, and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami flag, and as a result we are able to display these flags in our Copper Gallery. On June 21, students will learn more about each of the flags and their visual representation. Students may also participate in land-based learning opportunities by exploring the pond spaces looking for seasonal change and learn about the teachings connected to the summer solstice. Copperfield students will have the opportunity to experience a Jingle Dance presentation on June 22 at 10:00am to further build our capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.

We want to thank the many volunteers who helped to ensure that all casino shifts were covered on June 14 and 15 and appreciate the efforts of the Copperfield School Fundraising Society in ensuring the success of this fundraising opportunity. Thank you to those volunteers who have committed to supporting our activity day events on Friday June 23. We have a number of stations planned and I know students are very excited about this day.  Please ensure your student comes to school prepared to be outdoors for a few hours. It is recommended students bring a hat, water bottle, and apply sunscreen prior to coming to school.

This week teachers are finishing their assessment and reporting processes, and student report cards will be available on June 28 for families to view.  Report Cards are viewed online only and can be found within your MyCBE account.  Please review your MYCBE Account for any outstanding fees. The account balances remaining are for goods and services including noon supervision and student supplies, and we are encouraging families to settle their accounts this week.

Copperfield has heart!

Sincerely,

Mike Magowan

Principal Update

We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield school.  Our grade 5 students have had the opportunity to visit Dr. Martha Cohen to watch a drama performance and attend an orientation this past week.  I believe the DMC students have inspired some of Copperfield's' students to pursue drama as they move into middle school.  Thank you to the many volunteers that supported our grade 5 students on this field trip.

Copperfield school will be participating in an Activity Day on June 23, and we need numerous volunteers to support the multiple stations that we have planned.  Please complete the Activity Volunteer form that was shared with families last week and return it to your child's teacher by Thursday June 15.  Teachers will contact volunteers on June 16 to share greater detail about the day.

Indigenous History Month (June) activities and National Indigenous Peoples Day are opportunities to complement the ongoing work that lives in our learning spaces throughout the year through the Indigenous Holistic Education Lifelong Learning Framework.  National Indigenous Peoples Day is on Wednesday, June 21st!  Copperfield School will be hosting an Indigenous Dance presentation on June 22, 2023 at 10:00am.  The performance and discussion will continue to build student, staff and community capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.

We have many lost and found items still unclaimed, please remind your child to visit the lost and found to identify any missing items.  All lost and found items left unclaimed on June 29, 2022 will be donated.  With the hot weather, students are reminded to bring a hat for outdoor learning times and a refillable water bottle.

Mike Magowan

Principal Update

We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to learn about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis. Indigenous History Month (June) and National Indigenous Peoples Day are opportunities to complement the ongoing work that lives in our learning spaces throughout the year through the Indigenous Holistic Education Lifelong Learning Framework. It is a time of sharing and celebration – a time of joy, pride, identity, culture, and community. This month Copperfield School and all CBE schools will participate in the gifting of the Treaty 7, Métis Nation, and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami flags, to honour Indigenous Treaty relationships, rights, and responsibilities. Copperfield school will be looking back on our current Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) Commitments to Action to walk forward with a renewed commitment for the 2023-24 school year. We will explore the land around Copperfield as we make note of Summer Solstice on June 21, and we will be welcoming Jingle Dancers to Copperfield School on June 22 as part of our ongoing learning.

I would like to thank our School Council and volunteer team that has worked diligently on the Planter Project in front of the school, and who have recently planted new native plant species in the outdoor planters.  I would also like to thank our kindergarten team and school council members who hosted our kindergarten orientation last week and welcomed our newest families to Copperfield school.

Copperfield Gr 1-5 students will be participating in an Activity Day on June 23, and we need numerous volunteers to support the multiple stations that we have planned. Please complete the Activity Volunteer form that was shared with families on Friday June 2 and return to your child's teacher by Thursday June 8, 2023.  Kindergarten students will be participating in a special Activity Day event on Monday June 26, which includes activities and stations created by our Grade 5 leadership team.  Kindergarten families can watch for more information via their classroom blogs.

We are entering the last few weeks of school and there are still many learning opportunities occurring within our classroom spaces. I understand it is a very exciting time as everyone looks forward to summer activities, spring activities are winding down and the evenings are warm and bright. However, it is still important that students maintain consistent routines and healthy habits, in order to be calm, focused, and ready to learn to ensure that we all end the school year successfully.

Copperfield has heart!

Sincerely,

Mike Magowan

Principal Update

We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. With increased traffic volume and bright spring mornings, it is a great time to remind drivers to be aware of students walking and riding their bikes or scooters to school. U-Turns and double parking creates an unsafe situation for your child and for the other drivers, and all drivers must approach crosswalks with care. Please choose safety over convenience and take the extra time to find a safe spot to pull over and park. Students are reminded to bring a lock and use the designated racks to secure their personal items. There are bike racks on both the west/east side of the building and there are scooter racks designed specifically for locking up scooters by the grade 4 doors.  For everyone's safety students are reminded to walk their bike and/or scooter while on school sidewalks and grounds before and after school.

Copperfield School Council and School Fundraising Association are very important and valued members of our Copperfield School Community. Our council members provide guidance on decisions, organize school activities, and provide learning opportunities for students. Thank you to all members of our school council for their on-going dedication and support of our students at Copperfield school. Our next School council meeting is Thursday May 18 at 6:30pm, and is a great way for members of our community to learn about school happenings and events. The Copperfield School Fundraising Association has their casino fundraiser on June 14 and 15 at the Deerfoot Casino. This is by far the most lucrative fundraising opportunity for the school, and volunteers are the key to making this event successful. The funds raised have previously supported Artist in Residencies, PE equipment, technology, books, math manipulatives, art supplies, and reduced bussing costs for field trips. If you are interested in volunteering and supporting the students of Copperfield please see below for more information.
