| Principal Update We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. It was great to welcome families into Copperfield school for March Conferences. We are extremely proud of Copperfield students and the learning progress that has occurred. Families are an integral part of the learning process and we encourage you to continue to check classroom Blogs daily and to connect with your child's teacher if you have questions. If your family was unable to attend conferences and you still wish to set up a meeting, please email your teacher to make an alternate arrangement. We know we make better decisions to support student learning when we build understanding and work together. Please watch for a School Messenger on Friday March 17 inviting families to share their perspectives through an online survey open from March 17 to March 31, 2023. The Messenger will contain a link to an engagement survey regarding our School Development Plan, as well as school fees and budgeting. You can access our School Development Plan, School Development Plan Results Report, and Report to Parents and Guardians on Fees in the About Us – Our School tab on of our school website: https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/copperfield/about-us/school/pages/default.aspx The Copperfield Read-a-Thon is coming to an end, however, students still have a few more days to count those reading minutes. We continue to welcome many amazing guest readers into our building, including the Chief Superintendent of the Calgary Board of Education Mr. Usih. Make sure to ask your child which guest readers have visited their classroom space. Students are encouraged to continue reading at home to further their love of reading and the opportunity to win some amazing prizes provided by the Copperfield School Council and Fundraising Society. Pledge forms and minutes read need to be counted and sent back to the school on Monday March 20 in order to be entered into the prize draws. Copperfield has heart!
Sincerely,

| Principal Update We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. All staff are very excited to welcome families to our March School conferences on Thursday and Friday of this week. March conferences are designed as an opportunity for teachers to discuss learner strengths, areas for growth and strategies to support continued success with students and parents/guardians. We look forward to connecting with all families this week. Parents/Guardians please:
- Book a conference online through the conference booking site.
- Think about your child's academic areas of strength, academic areas for growth, effective learning strategies, and educational goals to help facilitate the conversation.
- Make note of any questions you may have, so that you can discuss them during the conference.
Teachers will:
- Share examples of student work, discuss learning successes and identify next steps to promote academic and well-being growth.
- Meet families in their classroom at their scheduled interview time.
- Admit families into their interview at any time during the 15 minute conference window, however, teachers must end the interview at the scheduled time.
- If families are unable to attend, an alternate arrangement can be made with the teacher for a telephone, video or in-person conference at an alternate date.
This past week the Calgary Fire Department visited Copperfield School to discuss Ice and Pond Safety. This presentation is important for our community and helps to ensure that we are all navigating the many water spaces safely during outdoor learning opportunities. I encourage families to ask their child about this presentation and to review safety precautions as the spring weather approaches. The upcoming spring equinox, on March 20th, will indicate the beginning of a new season. Once again, Na'toosi (Grandfather Sun) and Kokomikisomm (Grandmother Moon) will share the sky equally, providing a balance of day and night. Motoyi (spring in Blackfoot) is a time of renewal and new beginnings. After a season of rest, the land comes to life with new growth, movement, and sounds. This also serves as a reminder that Sunday March 12, 2023 Daylight Saving Time is observed and Albertans will move their clocks ahead one hour.
Copperfield has heart! Sincerely,

Principal Update We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. Thank you to all of the volunteers that supported the fun lunch today, and we truly appreciate all of the volunteer support our Copperfield community receives. March School Conferences will be held on March 9 and 10, 2023: - Thursday March 9, 2023
- 8am-8pm Kindergarten Conferences (No School for Kindergarten students)
- 4pm-8pm Grades 1-5
- Friday March 10, 2023 – No School for students
- 8am – 12pm Kindergarten (Mrs. Ly classes only)
- 8am – 12pm Grades 1 - 5
- School Conference meetings are a key component of our reporting process to parents/guardians. The January Report Card was an opportunity for parents/guardians to receive graded information about their child in relation to the program of studies at the end of Term 1. The March conference is an opportunity for teachers to share learning progress with families and highlight key next steps in the learning progression for the remainder of Term 2. Parents/guardians will book their 15-minute conference time on-line using their MyCBE Account. The CBE conference booking site will open to families to begin booking conferences on Thursday March 2 at 6:00pm. Once the conference is booked, Parents/guardians should receive an email confirming the scheduled interview time. Families with multiple children at Copperfield, may want to leave a 15 minute space between your bookings, so that you can get from one conference to the next, in order to maximize your time. Please contact the school if you are having any difficulties with bookings
Let's spring into Reading! The annual Copperfield School Read-A-Thon hosted by the Copperfield School Council and Fundraising Society is set to begin March 6-17, 2023. Students will bring home a Read-a-Thon Information page and pledge form on March 1, outlining all of the key information and dates. Throughout the two week Read-a-Thon Copperfield students will participate in literacy games, special reading activities, themed days and special guest readers will join our classrooms. Thank you to the Copperfield School Council and Fundraising Society and all the volunteers that support this event, and all funds raised will be used to increase our literacy resources such as decodable books, phonemic resources and home reading materials.
Lastly, our students have once again demonstrated that Copperfield has heart. I am extremely proud of the work students and staff have engaged in over the month of February learning about empathy, kindness and developing their understanding of Social/Emotional intelligence. We culminated our work with Pink Shirt day and a door decorating challenge this past week. Please ask your child about the work they have engaged in over the month of February and we know this is ongoing learning and central to our objective of creating a safe, caring, and welcoming space.
Copperfield has Heart!
Sincerely,
Mike Magowan

| Principal Update We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. This week our kindness activities focused on demonstrating kindness and building empathy. It was wonderful to see Copperfield Students wearing pink and joining schools from across Canada to support bullying prevention awareness, education and programs today. Thank you to our kindergarten students for demonstrating strong leadership and for hosting our Pink Shirt Day assembly. Our youngest leaders messaging around kindness not only cemented the learning Copperfield students have been engaging in, but further challenged all of us to have greater acceptance, respect, and inclusion for everyone. #BeKindAB, encourages all of us to be inclusive, welcoming and supportive with colleagues, clients, friends and family. Students are busy decorating their classroom doors in this creative and thoughtful kindness challenge. Classroom entry ways and doors are coming to life with kindness messages and artwork. Each doorway is special and is meant to embrace the identities and true selves of each student at Copperfield School. Classrooms will visit each door and discuss the messaging to encourage further learning and dialogue. The annual Copperfield's Read-A-Thon is scheduled from March 6 – 17. This two-week event will include literacy games, spirit days, guest readers and reading opportunities designed around the enjoyment of reading. More information will be shared by school council and through teacher blogs in the upcoming weeks. Copperfield has heart!
Sincerely,
Mike Magowan

| Principal UpdateWe look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. Thank you to the volunteers who helped organize the special treat for our students on Tuesday. Copperfield students and staff greatly appreciate your support.
This week our kindness activities focused on demonstrating kindness towards others. Students worked collaboratively to create window messages to be shared with our community, and some classrooms contributed to the Global Bird Count Project by noticing and sharing the type and number of birds in our area. The winter cards that were shared in December with a nearby care facility were greatly appreciated by its members, and their leadership team made a request for Copperfield students to send Valentine’s message to their residents. Students worked in buddies to create special messages focused on Kindness to be shared with those residents.
Teachers and Support Staff Convention will be held on Thursday, February 16 and Friday, February 17 for all CBE teachers and support staff. There is no school for students on these days. Conventions give teachers an opportunity to reflect on and learn about new and innovative pedagogical practices and theories. The 2023 Convention is a core component of teacher professionalism, which in turn enhances student learning.
I wanted to wish everyone a wonderful Family Day Weekend and hope that your family can enjoy some of the amazing activities offered on this weekend both in our community and the greater area.
Copperfield has heart!
Sincerely,
Mike Magowan

| Principal Update We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. Teaching students to act with kindness and empathy is part of the important work we do each day at Copperfield School. Staff participated in professional learning on February 3 that focused on Social Emotional Learning, resiliency and regulation strategies. All grade teams will be participating in developing Kindness Activities throughout February including Winter Walk Activities, Kindness Cards for Care Facilities, Window Messages, Environmental Care, Classroom Door Decorating Challenge to inspire action towards being kind, Pink Shirt Day, Buddy activities, and kindness challenges. Look to your classroom blogs to learn more about this important work. Every February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and festivities that honour the legacy of Black people in Canada and their communities. The Calgary Board of Education and Copperfield School recognize Black History Month and the contributions of Black Canadians in communities across the country. This year, The City of Calgary's theme is "Black Resistance." The theme explores how Black people have resisted historical and ongoing systemic oppression. Additionally, the Government of Canada's theme is: “Ours to tell". Both themes represent an opportunity for Copperfield students to engage in open dialogue and a commitment to learning more about the stories Black communities in Canada have to talk about their histories, successes, sacrifices and triumphs. Pink Shirt Day is February 22, 2023. Schools from across Canada will wear pink to support bullying prevention awareness, education and programs. Copperfield kindergarten students will lead a school assembly honouring Pink Shirt Day. See times below: - AM kindergarten assembly will begin at 10:45am, and half the school will attend.
- PM Kindergarten assembly will begin at 2:30pm, and half the school will attend.
This year's theme, #BeKindAB, encourages Albertans to be inclusive, welcoming and supportive with colleagues, clients, friends and family. Building healthy relationships is one of the best ways to prevent bullying and create safe environments. The need to “lift Each other Up" and have greater acceptance, respect, and inclusion for everyone is so important. We encourage all students to wear pink on this day to show their support. For more information, please visit the Pink Shirt Day website. Copperfield has heart!
Sincerely,
Mike Magowan

First Term Report Card Available On-line January 30, 2023 Parents/Guardians of students in grade 1-5 at Copperfield School will have access to view student report cards starting Monday, January 30 through their MyCBE Account On-Going Student Assessment In addition to report cards, schools communicate with parents/guardians about student progress on an ongoing basis in a variety of ways. Assessment happens every day, in every classroom, throughout the school year. Assessing a student's progress is one of the most important ways we support the continued learning of our students. The CBE has developed some resources related to assessment and report cards to help families learn more about their child's learning. Visit the CBE website for more information on Assessment & Reporting at the CBE. Curriculum Information for Parents We recognize that parents play an important role in shaping the way their children view learning. The Alberta Government's My Child's Learning Resource page provides an overview of the curriculum for Grade K to High School. This resource will provide you with an understanding of Alberta's curriculum and related information for your child. Specific curriculum areas and outcomes that are reflected on the report card can be explored in detail. This will also help you discover what your child is learning, how they are being assessed, and what resources are available to help students be successful from Kindergarten to Grade 12. For instructions on how to view student report cards on-line please visit Accessing the On-line Report Card. If you require support to view the report card please contact the main office, and if you have questions regarding the report card please contact your child's classroom teacher. Principal Update We hope all members of our Copperfield community had a restful and wonderful Winter break. It was great to welcome students and staff back this week as we begin to conclude term one here at Copperfield. Our goal this week has been to review routines and to continue to set high expectations for all members of our learning community. During my classroom visits, I listened to many students discussing and setting learning goals for the remainder of the year. One classroom shared descriptive words that they have selected to focus on, and some examples included: resilience, perseverance, excellence, kindness, and joy. These words exhibit the genuine empathy and character our students continuously strive to demonstrate at Copperfield and are an example for all of us as we embark on a new year. I wish all members of Copperfield a Happy New Year and look forward to the amazing learning opportunities to come. Copperfield has heart! Sincerely,
Mike Magowan

| Principal Update We look forward to another great week of learning at Copperfield School. The Kindergarten Winter Celebration today was a great success, and we look forward to staying cozy and warm in our PJ's tomorrow on the last day of school before winter break. Today we honour Winter solstice, which is a celebration of light returning to Turtle Island. It is the shortest day of the year. Grandfather Sun begins to shine longer each day, bringing a promise of warmer weather, growth, and new life. Darkness can represent struggle, and light brings hope of easier times. Elder Randy Bottle (Saa'kokoto) teaches us that the Solstice begins a new year. It is a time for reflection, to look back at moons past and look forward to the “new sun" of the future; a time to appreciate what transpired over the past year, lessons that have been learned, and to set new intentions. The solstice is a time of significance, celebration, ceremony and song for some Indigenous cultures.
On behalf of all the staff at Copperfield School, I would like to extend our warmest wishes to all our families for the upcoming holiday season. We would like to thank you for your continued support, guidance and encouragement for your children. May your holiday be filled with warmth and cheer, enjoying time together with family and friends. We are looking forward to a fabulous 2023 and the return of all our students on January 9, 2023. Copperfield has heart!
Sincerely,
Mike Magowan Principal, Copperfield School
