Digital Citizenship at Copperfield School

Digital Citizenship in our schools is about having the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to demonstrate responsible and respectful behavior when using technology or participating in digital environments.

We are committed to preparing our students to thrive in the 21st century. Digital citizenship, with an emphasis on both safety and ethical behavior, is a key component of helping CBE students use the digital technologies available to their best advantage to reach their full potential with the CBE and beyond.

Copperfield School has a Digital Citizenship Plan in accordance with Administrative Regulation 1062 - Responsible Use of Electronic Devices. Use of electronic resources requires students to act morally and ethically when using all digital resources within Copperfield School (Alberta Education ICT Curriculum and AR 1062). Teachers and staff ensure that students understand their roles and responsibilities when using digitally networked resources and share in the supervision of all students while online (eg. – students who are working within their classroom learning environment on networked computers).

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) at Copperfield School

Students are welcome to bring their personal electronic devices to school as part of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) or Personally Owned Devices (POD) framework. They should understand how a device works and how its use supports their learning.

There is no requirement for students to bring their own device. Students will have access to devices at the school needed to support their learning. Tablets, laptops, iPads, smartphones and e-readers are acceptable devices.

CBE users can access the internet through student or guest access with wireless enabled devices that use an Internet browser for connectivity. Students will be required to acquire a once-a-year Device Key (activation code) to begin using their personal devices. After initial login, students will automatically be connected to the internet upon entry to the school. A new Device Key will be required at the beginning of each school year. All devices are subject to approval by the school and teacher.

Students must use their device appropriately and comply with AR 1062 – Responsible use of Electronic Information Resources. Ultimately, the teacher is the manager of the learning environment and will decide whether the device is being used appropriately. Students are responsible for any devices they bring to school. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.

If you would like your child to BYOD, please make sure to download the form, read through the expectations with your child. After reading the form, you and your child will need to sign it and return it to his or her classroom teacher before being able to use the device. Access

Electronic networkable devices and network access require teacher permission and supervision. Students will use their personal devices to support educational outcomes. Printing student work is permitted with staff permission. All students are eligible to receive a CBE e-mail account. By utilizing the school’s computers and / or the network, the following agreement is accepted.

Acceptable phone use
Phones are to be used by students to contact home when necessary, not for arranging social activities. The school will not assume responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen property and school staff will not store those items.

Electronic Agendas
Students and teachers at Copperfield use electronic communication "Blogs" rather than a paper agenda. You can communicate with your child's teacher via phone calls and email. Blogs are listed by teacher and can be found on the Classes & Departments page

Acceptable Use of Electronic Information Resources

The privilege to use devices and networks is dependent on the level of responsibility shown by individual students. It is our intent to have all students access these tools for learning on an ongoing basis. The following acts and prohibited sites constitute inappropriate use and may endanger students, and/or possibly damage the network, hardware, and/or software.

Prohibited acts include:

  • Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures
  • Using obscene language
  • Harassing, insulting, or attacking others Intentionally damaging computer equipment or the network
  • Violating copyright laws
  • Using other people’s folders, work, or files
  • Allowing others to use your account
  • Trespassing into other people’s folders, work, or files
  • Intentionally destroying other people’s work
  • Employing the CBE network for commercial purposes
  • Using electronic media for plagiarizing
  • Intentionally wasting system technology on non-teacher-approved activities such as:
    • Playing games
    • Participating in non-teacher-directed “chat” Participating in online gambling or other gaming activities
    • Downloading software or restricted files (e.g. Exe, Zip, mp3)
    • Installing software on any school computer
    • Excessive or inappropriate printing

Students must respect intellectual property and adhere to copyright, software piracy and fair dealing laws associated with learning technologies.

Prohibited Sites include those, which contain:

  • Vulgar or lewd depiction of the human body.
  • Content publicly labeled for adults.
  • Violent acts.
  • Online gambling.
  • Sites that encourage the use of illicit or illegal drugs, tobacco, or alcohol.
  • Sites that advocating violence or hatred against an identifiable group.ie. race, religion, gender, disabilities, age, colour, sexual orientation, etc.
  • Sites promoting criminal activity.

Violation of the CBE Policy

Each situation is dealt with on an individual basis and breach of policy may result in:

  • Restriction or loss of technology privileges.
  • School based disciplinary consequences.
  • Police intervention and/or legal action.

Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping our students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens.
