Science

In high school science courses, you focus on interconnected ideas and principles, such as change, diversity and energy. You develop scientific knowledge through collecting, analyzing and interpreting experimental evidence. In science courses, you make connections among science, technology and society. You continue to develop your sense of wonder about the natural world.

Science Advanced Placement (AP)

Laboratory experiences for all AP science classes are supported by the use of the most up to date technology available at the high school Level. The use of technology to support the gathering, analysis and interpretation of experimental data will give our students a true taste of the technological advancements awaiting them at post‐secondary institutions.

Science 10 Pre‐AP

An introduction to Science 10 Pre‐AP is a starting point for students to further enroll in Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics at the 20/30 level. Instruction provides an introduction to proper lab techniques and data analysis.

Physics 20 Pre‐AP and Physics 30/35 AP

Beyond the comprehensive Alberta Physics 20/30 curriculum, students study torque, rotational statics, rotational dynamics, angular momentum, and electric circuits. In this course, students experience university level rigour and challenge enhanced by the broad scope of the AP Physics 1 curriculum. The emphasis on laboratory design, data analysis and problem solving places students at the center of learning, resulting in a more personal connection to physics’ concepts in the real world.

"Science in AP is a must if you want to pursue further courses within the science world. I feel prepared going into University." - Sarah C.

Chemistry 20 Pre‐AP & 30/35 AP

Along with the Alberta Chemistry 20/30 curriculum, the advanced placement curriculum is designed to be the first course in post‐secondary studies. Topics include atomic theory, expressing changes using chemical equations, chemical bonding, gas laws, liquid and solids, solutions, stoichiometry, equilibrium, kinetics, redox, thermochemistry and thermodynamics. Strong emphasis on developing theory, mathematical calculations and laboratory skills will be enhanced. Students are provided with a specific problems to investigate and are then expected to design labs to address the problem.

Biology 20/30/35 AP

This course covers and extend the Biology 20/30 curriculum by using an advanced paradigm. Students examine at the material through the four Big Ideas of the AP program:

  1. Evolution,
  2. Biological systems,
  3. Living systems, and
  4. Biological system interactions.

AP labs use an inquiry‐based model and include concepts of Hardy Weinberg, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, osmosis, mitosis, meiosis, bacterial transformation, restriction enzymes and transpiration. The diversity of topics provides students with both intellectual knowledge and analytical skills.

"I liked the fact that I could take the regular program in grade 10 and then take AP in grade 11. I really enjoy the challenge of biology and the AP program made that possible" - Michelle Y.
