One way parents/guardians can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on our school’s parent society. Parent societies are a formal group of parents, incorporated under the Societies Act for the purpose of raising funds for the school. A society is a separate legal entity from the school council. More information can be found in our CBE Administrative Regulation 5001 – School Councils and School/Parent Societies.

Looking for Support to Create a Parent Society for our School

Unfortunately, for the last five years, Douglas Harkness School has not had a Parent Society fundraising group. Therefore, our school has been ineligible to apply for important fundraisers that almost all other Alberta public schools access through the AGLC. A Parent Society is a group of parents or community members, incorporated  under the Societies Act for the specific purpose of raising funds for the school.

The Parent Society would have access to Casino fundraising opportunities which would benefit our schools and provide important extras for a school such as updated technology, physical education equipment, special fine arts residencies, etc. Our school is at a distinct disadvantage without access to opportunities for this type of fundraising.

We need a Parent Society and we are looking for parents who would be willing to make a commitment to work on forming a new Parent Society for Douglas Harkness School. If you would be able to help with this, or if you would like more information on what this entails and how you would be supported in this work, please let Principal George know.
