Grade 7

Concept and Topics

The concept for grade 7s this year is, "The Power of Influence: How do interactions influence change?"

We have begun our exploration of this concept by learning about bias, stereotypes, discrimination, racism and how these topics are interrelated. Students did a series of online quizzes, assessing the extent of their own personal implicit bias, but have yet to dig deeper into what those biases mean in terms of their thoughts, choices, and actions. We will continue to explore these topics through comparing and contrasting different perspectives of majority and minority groups, as well as developing writing skills to state a position and defend that position in a well-developed and articulate manner.

Question(s) to ask at home: What implicit biases do you hold? Where do you think biases are formed? Should you be embarrassed or ashamed of the bias(es) you hold? Why or why not?
