Traffic Safety

Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near our schools, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

Parking & Drop-Off

School Bus Zone

Strathlea Green is a bus zone for us. The bus driver needs the “bulb” area at the bottom of the street to make the turn and then the driver parks on the east side of the street. The bus arrives at 8:02 AM and 2:40 PM. Once the bus is here, you can use the area as a drop-off and pick-up. As the City has designated it no parking, do not park and leave your vehicle on Strathlea Green or you may get a ticket!

Parking

School Parking Lot

Do not use the school parking lot for drop-off and pick-up. This is very dangerous. We do not want students walking through the parking lot as it is often very difficult to see a child when backing up. We understand we have already had a near miss. Not all of our staff starts at the same time, so there are people coming into the parking lot at different times.

Visitor Parking

In the spring of 2017, we will be in a position to offer visitor parking on the Southeast corner of our school parking lot for visitors only. This is not in effect until we can have the signage in place. We are unable to provide visitor parking in the Staff Parking Lot.

Street Parking

On Strathcona Dr. SW, during the high volume times times (8:15 - 8:30 AM and 2:25 - 3:10 PM), the traffic flows much better when people do not park in front of the school. This allows for easy access to the Hug and Go area, while allowing for the City buses to make their stops and other motorists to proceed down the street. Strathcona Dr. is a snow route - do not park there during Snow Route Parking Bans.

Street parking is available on many other streets near the school including Strathlea Crescent SW, Strathlea Ct SW, Strathlea Gate SW, Strathlea Grove SW and Aspen Summit Circle SW. Wherever you choose to park, please respect our neighbours.

Hug and Go

The Hug and Go area is on Strathcona Drive between the crosswalk and the school parking lot. Our volunteers (adults in yellow safety vests) have placed orange cones on the street indicating the area where you are able to drop off your child(ren). Please be mindful of the crosswalk area and not stop in the crosswalk. We are appreciative of the parents who have volunteered to organize and provide a very helpful service! They will open the vehicle doors and ensure students are safely out. Likewise in the afternoon, they will open the doors and help the children into the vehicle.

School Safety Patrol

The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) is allowing us to form School Patrols with our Grade 4 students. In partnership with the Calgary Police Service, they will come to our school and help us train Grade 5 and 6 students to take on this important leadership role.Visit ama.ab.ca/SchoolPatrol for more information.

We hope our School Patrols will help you and your children cross Strathcona Drive safely. Our patrols will be set up at the crosswalk intersection of Strathcona Drive and Strathlea Green.

Crosswalk

Please cross the street in the crosswalk; we want to model safety for our students and ensure that our students are safe. Teach your child(ren) to safely cross any street. It is important we teach children to cross at a crosswalk and to put their arm out to signal drivers of their intention to cross. Whether we use words such as “Stop, Look and Listen” or “Point, Pause and Proceed,” we need children to be very aware of where they are in relation to the traffic and determine when and where it is safe to cross.

Do not stop your vehicle in the crosswalk. Jaywalking and stopping in the crosswalk are also unsafe and illegal.

Enforcement

There have been a number of calls to the city regarding speeding, u-turns in the playground zones and stopping in the crosswalk. The parking authority and Calgary Police Service may at any time enforce and issuing tickets. They can also ticket pedestrians for jaywalking.

Remember, u-turns are not permitted in front of schools or anywhere within a playground zone.

Respect Our Neighbours

There are community members who are concerned about the number of people parking across their driveway, or using their driveway as a way to make a turn. Please be respectful of our neighbours. Do not park on private property, block driveways or park side-by-side.

Before and After School Care Providers

If your child is attending before and after school care, and is being picked-up or dropped off by a third party, the third party must abide by the same rules.
