Learning Commons at the CBE

Today’s learners cannot imagine life without the internet and supporting technology. The concept of the traditional library is changing to include technology, online tools and spaces for collaboration and exploration.

Learning Commons / Library

Welcome to the "new" Learning Commons!

Spring is in the air here in the Erin Woods Learning Commons, as we welcome in 2022 with a brand new, exciting and colorful layout to our space! There is now a Cozy Corner for quiet reading, a non-fiction area surrounding the very popular flags of the world carpet, an ever-expanding Graphic Novel & Chapter book collection, a few computer/work spaces and some upcoming plans for Lego and Robotics areas as well!

My name is Tracy Armstrong, and I am the new Library Assistant here at Erin Woods.  We’ve been working hard over the past few months welcoming the students back into this bright space for their weekly Book exchanges, as well as giving them functional spaces to build their confidence working on various projects independently.

We have added many new titles to our collection recently - please help to remind your students to return their books every week so they are able to explore all these new and exciting books!

I’m looking forward to sharing in the curiosity for learning, the hunger for new adventures and love of reading with the students for the rest of the school year!

Learning Resources

Learning is changing with the way we create, access and share information and resources. It has become collaborative and personalized for learners. A learning commons is a shift in thinking from the library as a physical space that is for storage of books to an inclusive and flexible space for collaboration, inquiry, imagination and play. Supporting a diversity of learning styles and needs, these resource-rich environments help make learning visible in our schools by uniting physical and digital resources, technology and curriculum.  In our Learning Commons we have added a green house, cozy nooks for group work, whiteboard tables, computers, hands on building supplies, and our construction table.  All of these help us to extend our learning beyond the borders of our classrooms.
