French as a Second Language - 10-3Y (5 credits)
Prerequisite Recommendation: no background OR no more than 2 years of French in Junior High school OR less than 65% in Grade 9 French. Students must be able to produce a sample piece of writing and have a strong knowledge of the following French 10 concepts to be successful in French 20:
French as a Second Language three year program. Students will develop skills in all the 4 areas of the language (listening, speaking, reading, writing). Students will develop basic communication skills through the study of a variety of topics in an interactive manner. Cultural information will be incorporated throughout.
Content: present tense regular verbs –er/-ir/-re
- irregular verbs (avoir, etre, aller, faire, vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, lire, mettre, voir, etc.)
- expressions with ‘avoir’ and ‘faire’
- future proche
- question formation
- possessive adjectives
- adjectives and agreements
- negative formation and placement
- coopérative
- conjunctions (mais,et, ou, quand, où, etc.)
French as a Second Language - 20-3Y (5 credits)
Prerequisite Recommendation: French 10 with 65% or higher OR at least two years of Junior High French AND 65% or high in French 9. Students must be able to produce a sample piece of writing with good thought and detail and have a strong knowledge of the previously listed skills in the French 10 listings, as well as the following concepts to be successful in challenging French 20.
Students will build on their previous skills in all the areas of language learning. Extension of previously studied topics and cultural aspects as well as exploration of new topics will allow students to add to their learning.
Content: regular and irregular verbs in the past, present and future tenses
- passé composé and imparfait
- future simple
- imperative
- expressions with ‘avoir’, ‘être’, ‘faire’
- questions using inversion
- negative (ne..pas, ne..jamais, ne..pas encore, ne..rien, ne..personne, ne..plus)
- direct and indirect object pronouns (le, la, les, lui, leur, y, en)
- comperative and superlative adverbs and adverbial expressions
- conjunctions
French as a Second Language - 30-3Y (5 credits)
Prerequisite Recommendation: French 20 with 65% or higher OR completed at least 2 years of Junior High in French immersion with a passing grade. Students must be able to produce a sample piece of writing with very good thought and detail and have a strong knowledge of the previously listed skills in the French 10 and 20 listing, as well as the following concepts to be successful in challenging the 30-level.
This course builds on the previous learned skills and adds new areas of exploration.
