HAVE YOU BOOKED YOUR student led conference yet? We would love to see you and your child would love to show you what they are learning. To book an interview you will need to log into PowerSchool:
On the school’s website http://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/evergreen/Pages/default.aspx
A little way down on the right hand side is a box that says Power School
Click there and you will need to log in.
We have learned about three letters this week, F, B and J. We are almost done the alphabet!
It is helpful if you that the time to practice the letters and sounds at home to help your child build their confidence. We are trying to use their knowledge more often in the daily writing and extra practice is always helpful.
We have talked about hand washing in Kindergarten and how important to keep our hands to ourselves, out of our mouths and off our faces. Just so that you know what we have told them:
Get your hands wet
Put soap on your hands
Rub the soap all over your hands (top, palm, between fingers, and wrists)
Sing the alphabet as you are rubbing
When you have sung it once or twice (about 30 seconds)
Rinse off your hands
Wipe with a cloth

We will be holding an Usborne Book Fair in conjunction with the parent-teacher conferences. Come and see Usborne’s award-winning range of entertaining and educational books for children from toddlers to teens! The range of titles includes arts, crafts, science, history, nature, music, early readers, hobbies, sports, activity kits, adventure stories, sticker books and puzzles. We have many books which complement and enrich the Alberta Curriculum. There will be over 300 books on display, including a selection from the more than 60 new titles released this year, and you will also have the chance to choose from over 1000 titles in the Usborne Catalogue. Rather than taking the books home at once, the books will be ordered and delivered to school approximately 2 weeks later. Come and browse and get to know these outstanding books.
Your purchases will earn 25% of retail sales in free books for use in the school.

It is helpful if you that the time to practice the letters and sounds at home to help your child build their confidence. We are trying to use their knowledge more often in the daily writing and extra practice is always helpful.
Can you please check at home for library books. We have several students with two books out and have sent notices home in plastic bags. Our library day is Monday but books can be returned whenever.

Tuesday March 3rd
A reminder to Mrs. Bridles class! A film crew from “The Nature of Things” will be in your classroom tomorrow morning. This will have no impact on the other classes and it will not change how our morning schedule or how our day runs.
Monday we did the letter O and made some Oobleck. There is a story on youtube about Bartholomew and the Oobleck, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDef7vCgrk0 by Dr. Seuss. The story is kind of long so we did not watch it. If you have time maybe you could share it together. If you would like to make some together the recipe is 2 parts corn starch to one part water. You can watch the oobleck dance (just google BigBang Theory and oobleck) with a speaker too! Ours did not dance because our speaker was not big enough.
On Tuesday we did the letter U. We read stories about underpants! One was called “Aliens in Underpants Save the World” and another was “Dinosaurs love Underpants”
Each time we learn a new letter we watch some videos about that letter. The three we watch are from the websites: Have fun teaching, Jack Hartmann alphabet and Story bots.
It is helpful if you that the time to practice the letters and sounds at home to help your child build their confidence. We are trying to use their knowledge more often in the daily writing and extra practice is always helpful.
Scholastic orders are due so that we can get in orders and get them back before Spring Break.

Sound Kreations dance residency is almost done! The morning group shared with their buddies today. The afternoon group will share tomorrow. We will have a video for you to watch during upcoming Parent Teacher conferences. I am sure if you asked me what our dance is like I could show you some of it.
From the Gym:
Our students have been working hard and enjoying our 2 week Sound Kreations Hip Hop Residency with Josh. This Friday will be a chance for classes to informally share their new skills and celebrate with their peers in a 1-2 minute dance. In order to fit a dance floor and all the student audience, there is not sufficient room in our gym to invite parents to the live performance. Not to worry though! The performance will be videotaped and shared with parents at the upcoming Student Led Conferences.
Thank you to Parent Council for supporting this residency and to all the students for their incredible energy and enthusiasm during this program!
Ms Roworth and Mr. Josh
We learned about the letter E on Wednesday and the letter H. The rhyme for each have been added to the end of the blog.
It is helpful if you that the time to practice the letters and sounds at home to help your child build their confidence. We are trying to use their knowledge more often in the daily writing and extra practice is always helpful.
Valentines
We will be celebrating Valentines on Wednesday February 12th. If you choose to send in Valentines please DO NOT put who the card it “to”, just fill in the “from”. This makes sharing the cards much easier for us. In Mrs. Bridle’s class there are 18 children, Mrs. Osadec’s and Mrs. Decottignies morning classes both have 18 students. In the afternoon classes there are a total of 30 students.

TOMORROW IS AM KINDERGARTEN
Wow we sure got lucky this week with outdoor school. The weather was fantastic and we had a lot of fun. Wednesday, we made a thermometer, tried some snowshoes and made shadows. Today we had a scavenger hunt for some nature items and looked back at the activities we had done this week. We also built some 2 and 3 d shapes in the snow.
We are hoping to go outside some more over the next few months and will send home an email to give you a heads up. It is helpful though when your child comes to school with outdoor clothing appropriate for any weather.

“Your Welcome!”
We are sure the sleep your little ones will have tonight will be the best one they have had in ages! Today’s outdoor school was activity based. We did an obstacle course, learned a game called “Fox and Geese” and moved in different ways in the snow and it was pretty deep considering the length of Kindergarten legs!
Yesterday was an art day. We painted with paint pucks. Sprayed stencils and made our own pictures with colored water. Made pictures with items from nature like pine cones, sticks, berries and rocks.
Tomorrow will be science based.
Please remember to wear your outdoor gear and it is best if the mittens are waterproof.

With the Polar Vortex settling in on Calgary this week, we are asking…in fact begging, for all children to have proper outdoor wear. A number of children are coming to school on these bitterly cold days with no mittens, no hats and no boots. It only takes a few minutes of being outside in the bitterly cold temperatures to get frostbite. PLEASE ensure your child has a hat, mittens, a winter jacket and boots on when they arrive at school. This is also a safety issue. In the event of an evacuation, we have to walk to our safe location and therefore all children need to have proper outdoor winter wear.
Looking forward
In years past we have done an outdoor school at some point in January. With the forecast the way it is, it will NOT be in the next few weeks. We make a point of looking ahead to give you as much warning as possible. We are crossing our fingers and hoping for lots of snow but temperatures that are reasonable. We go outside and do some science experiments, art, gym and just learn in the snow. When we make the decision to go outside please make sure that your child is dressed for playing in the snow. Toques, mitts, scarves and snow pants are a must. Please keep an eye on the blog to keep up with our plans.

The one for “S” is to the tune of “Farmer in the Dell” it is snake is the grass. For “A” the tune is “Skip to my Lou” and the words are ants on the apple.

We will be collecting food for the Calgary Food Bank at both performances and continue until the winter break.
Looking forward
In January years past we have done an outdoor school. We make a point of looking at the forecast, crossing our fingers and hoping for lots of snow but temperatures that are reasonable. We go outside and do some science experiments, art, gym and just learn in the snow. Please keep an eye on the blog in the new year to keep up with our plans.
Enjoy your evening!

A note from the grade 2’s
Thank you to our Evergreen families and parent council...because of you...the grade 2s were able to reach their goal of raising $1200 to fill 50 children's backpacks with mittens, toys, craft supplies, etc. for Stephen's Backpack Society. These backpacks will be picked up and delivered to children living at the numerous shelters in and around Calgary.
