September update for parents

September 16, 2022

Dear Fairview Families,
Our school year is well underway and with everything considered has started quite smoothly.  Busing being our only exception and I will expand on the current situation below.
Fairview School, CBE Transportation and First Student are diligently working to rectify the bus driver situation due to the shortage of bus drivers. Bus companies are doing their best to recruit additional drivers.  The school does its best to communicate with families as soon as we are aware of delays, specifically for the afternoon routes.  Repeatedly, families have been advised to refer to the First Student portal, firstudentcalgary.busstatus.ca, for updates.  Should you have concerns and complaints they must be submitted via the Concerns and Complaints form.  Here is the link to this form:  https://www.cbe.ab.ca/FormsManuals/concerns-and-complaints-form.pdf .  We appreciate your patience and understanding as we all work towards a viable solution.
We have been advised that Fairview School still has approximately 100 bus rider request submissions to be processed.  The CBE transportation team is working overtime to get these processed as quickly as possible.  They do advise that fall registrations and/or changes for transportation can take 4-8 weeks for processing.  Students cannot ride the bus until they have been registered with transportation.  Parents are required to make other transportation arrangements during this time.  Keeping your student at home is not a viable solution and should this be your last resort, please contact Ms. McCoag, Principal.
Our Soccer, Volleyball and Cross Country teams are well underway.  Only team members should attend practices.  Families should not be sending additional siblings with their child who is on a team nor having them stay after school for afternoon practices.  Our teachers have volunteered their time to coach your children on these various teams and are not able to supervise additional students.  The school does not have additional staff available to supervise these students.
Parking around the school is limited and does have restrictions to it. Fyfe Road is allocated to buses only and parents are not to park on the school side of this street.  Fairmount Drive has limitations as to stopping areas and this is for pick-up or drop-off only.  Parents are not to park for longer time periods.  This includes having to come into the office.  Our community neighbors, Church and Shopping Plaza, understand the parent need to park in a safe location, please respect these community members and keep your parking time to a minimum.
Parents are reminded that the school doors do not open until 8:50 am.  Students that are dropped off earlier than this are expected to wait outside.  Again, we do not have staff available to supervise students at this time.  Parents are expected to pick up their students at the end of the school day between 3:50 -4:00 pm.  The only exceptions to this are for those students who are under the direct supervision of a teacher (athletic teams etc.,) and those staying due to a late bus.
As the weather is getting cooler, all students must come to school prepared to spend their Physical Education classes and lunch recess outside.  Parents, please ensure that your child(ren) have the appropriate clothing with them.

Also, we are reminding parents that should you child be sick, they should not be coming to school.  In the event that the school calls you to come and pick up your child as they are not well, you are expected to come and pick up your child.  We are still coming out of a pandemic and this is for the well-being of all.
Fairview office hours are from 8:30 am to 4:15 pm Monday to Thursday and from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm on Fridays.  We cannot guarantee that the phones will be answered outside of these hours.
Lastly, our Meet the Teacher evening will occur on Thursday, September 22, 2022.    This will occur online.  Parents will be sent a link to a Teams meeting for their child's grade group.  This link will be sent to you on Monday, September 19, 2022 via School Messenger.  Also, it will be posted on teacher's D2L and Google classroom sites.  These meetings are only 15 minutes in length and are intended for teachers to introduce themselves and outline their curriculum outcomes.  Meetings will take place between 6:30 pm and 8:00 pm.  Please see the schedule below for your child's grade time.  This is not the time for parents to be asking specific questions about their child.  Should you have questions, please email your child's teachers directly.  Teacher emails can be found on our school website.
Grade 4            6:30 – 6:45
Grade 5            6:45 – 7:00
Grade 6            7:00 – 7:15
Grade 7            7:15 – 7:30
Grade 8            7:30 – 7:45
Grade 9            7:45 – 8:00

Again, we thank you for your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,

Fairview Admin
