Principal's Message

Welcome to the 2023-24 School Year

Dear Fairview Families;
Welcome to our 2023-24 School Year.
I hope that all of our students, parents and staff have had a wonderful summer break. A new school year comes with new students and new staff. We welcome Sherri Bailey, Brad Bridgewater, Angela Grammatikos, Sukhpal Jassar, Stephanie Karbashewski, Lauren Keele, Shaundra Lang, Christina Malbasa, Erin Michiels, and Natalie Wong as new teachers, and Marla Mack as a new secretary to Fairview School   Also, we welcome Mike Ross as our new Assistant Principal.
On Thursday, August 31, 2023 Grades 4-6 ONLY will attend classes. Upon arrival to school all grade 4-6 students will come to the Upper Gym. Parents will be asked to say goodbye prior to students entering school. We will have a full school day (9:10 – 3:50) on Thursday, August 31, 2023. This day will consist of a variety of orientation activities and time spent getting to know your teachers and classmates. Students will be required to pack a lunch and a snack for the day. Students are expected to be in their informal uniform. Upon arrival at school all students will come to the Upper Gym.
Friday, September 1, 2023 ALL Students will attend classes. Upon arrival at school all grade 7-9 students will come to the Upper Gym. This day is a regular Friday schedule (9:10 – 1:30). As with our elementary grades, this day will consist of a variety of orientation activities and time spent getting to know your teachers and classmates. Students will be required to pack a snack for the day. Students are expected to be in their informal uniform.
Tuesday, September 5, 2023 ALL Students are expected to be in attendance. This is a regular school day (9:10 – 3:50). Students are expected to be in their informal uniform.
Please visit our website should you be uncertain as to school hours.
All buses will be running as of Thursday, August 31, 2023. Information regarding bussing is on our website. Students must be registered with CBE Transportation to ride a school bus. If you have not already registered, it may take 2-6 weeks for your child to be registered for CBE Transportation.
We ask all parents to be considerate of family's homes when picking up and dropping off their children at the bus stop. Please do not park across the road where you may block people's driveways.
Parking is limited around Fairview School and is regulated by Calgary Parking Authority and Calgary City Police. Please obey all signs and park, or drop off your students, in the appropriate areas.
Fairview does not offer cafeteria services. Students are expected to bring a lunch and snack with them. Students need to provide their own eating utensils. All lunch items; bag, bottle and left over food are to be taken home on a daily basis. Students eat in designated areas and are to behave appropriately during the lunch break. Students need to bring a lunch that does not require heating.  Grades 4-7 must remain on campus for the lunch break. Grades 8-9 are allowed to leave the school campus during the lunch break. Although grades 8-9 are not restricted to the school campus for lunch, students are responsible to their parents and the school for their behaviour in the community. Should they choose to eat their lunch at the school, they will have a designated area to do so. Students choosing to exit the building at the beginning of the lunch break will not be allowed to re-enter the school until the end of the lunch break, weather permitting. The behaviour of our grade 8 and 9 students during their lunch recess will determine whether they continue to be allowed off campus or whether administration needs to change to a closed campus (students not allowed off campus at all).
Students in Grades 4-6 are not permitted to bring cell phones to school. Students in Grade 7-9 who choose to bring cell phones to school will be asked to leave their cell phones in their locker during class time. Cell phones are a distraction to student learning and therefore should not be in class. Students who forget to leave their cell phones in their locker will have a designated place in the classroom to store their phone during the class. Should parents/guardians need to be in contact with their child, they can call the front office and we can either get the message to your child or have them call home.
Fairview Student Picture Day will be held on Monday, September 11, 2023. All Students are to be in their Formal Uniform.
An information package of important documents for all students will be sent home during the first week of school. Some of these documents may be done electronically and others must be a paper copy. More information will be sent to families during the first week of school. Please be sure to read this package and return all forms by the required date.
As mentioned in a previous message to parents, requests for student class changes will only be considered for extenuating circumstances. Requests to be with friends, or specific teachers will not be considered. Any class change requests must come to Principal McCoag at tamccoag@cbe.ab.ca.
Parents and Students need to be aware that our athletic seasons of play have changed for this school year. Grades 6 – 9 are welcome to try out for athletic teams. Information regarding team try outs and practices will be posted in the school and during morning announcements. Seasons of play are as follows:
Cross Country – August 31 to October 31
Soccer – August 31 to October 29
Basketball – September 11 to December 3
Volleyball – January 8 to March 24
Badminton – April 2 to May 21

We look forward to working with all of our students and their families.
