Who was Frederick Ernest Osborne?

The name of our school honors an active, community-minded man, who made Calgary his home at the beginning of the last century. Mr. Osborne was born in Belleville, Ontario in 1878. There he attended elementary and high school. He later graduated from the Belleville Business College. He was married in 1901 and came to Calgary in 1904. Some residents of this city will remember Osborne’s Book Store. Mr. Osborne established this well-known retail outlet in 1905. It remained in its original location, 112 - 8 Avenue S.W., until it was destroyed by fire in 1966. Fred Osborne took a leadership role in many of Calgary’s service and social clubs. He was a president and district governor of the Rotary Club, president of the Calgary Board of Trade, a Mason, and a Shriner.

He was also a member of the Ranchman’s Club, the Calgary Golf and Country Club, and the Glencoe Club. Politics was another area in which he became actively involved. He twice served the city as an alderman, and he was the mayor of Calgary for three years (1927-1929). The University of Alberta recognized Mr. Osborne by awarding him an honorary degree of Doctor of Law. For his leadership role in the 2nd World War Finance Committee, he was awarded the prestigious Commander of the Order of the British Empire. This honor was given to him a few months before his death in 1948, and it underlined the fact that he had worked industriously for the people of Canada and the citizens of Calgary.

Our School's Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

We are committed to acknowledging and supporting the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission 94 Calls to Action specific to education. Our school, along with all CBE schools, made a TRC Commitment to Action. On June 21, we renewed our commitment, which can be found under Resources.

Acknowledging the Land

We would like to acknowledge the traditional territories and oral practices of the Blackfoot Nations, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani and the Kainai. We also acknowledge the Tsuut’ina and Stoney Nakoda First Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.

School Development Plan

Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

School Improvement Results Report

Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year. It shows our students’ achievement and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes as set out by the CBE and Alberta Education, outlines some of the highlights of our school development plan and gives an overview of our school. You can look on the CBE website for system-wide results.
