Upcoming Events:
· Friday, December 8: PD Day, No School
· Saturday, December 16: Fun Lunch Orders Due (Edo Japan)
· Thursday, December 21: Fun Lunch (Edo Japan)
· Friday, December 22: Pajama Day
· Friday, December 22: Winter Concert Performance, 10:00am, Families Welcome
· Saturday, December 23 – Sunday, January 7: Winter Break, No School
· Monday, January 8: School Resumes
Information/Reminders:
· Headphones Request: We will be integrating more technology time into our classroom. Students will at times be asked to listen to books or videos on the chromebooks or iPads. Due to the noise level this produces, as well as enabling the students to hear and focus on their technology, it would be beneficial for students to have headphones to use at school. I do have some available for students to use, but I do not have a full class set. If families are able, I would appreciate if you could send a pair of headphones to be kept at school. These will be kept in a safe place and only for your child’s use. If able, please send these to school in the next few weeks. Thank you for your support!
· Winter Clothing: Please ensure your child is dressed for snowy and cold weather. I recommend gloves, hats, warm jackets, boots and snowpants. Students are outside at least twice a day for recess breaks, with temperatures down to -20C. If you need support with wither clothing, please let us know.
Our Learning:
Literacy: Students continued to work on their Favourite Place writing, completing the drafting and revising phase this week. Students were asked to use the 3-2-1 Check It strategy to revise their work. They looked for:
3 convention errors (capitalization, punctuation, spelling)
2 places they could change or add an interesting word
1 sentence they could change to make it more interesting
Students also read over a classmate’s work and offered editing suggestions. Some began typing their drafts to publish them, which we will continue with next week.
Math/Art: We reviewed adding and subtracting patterns this week in preparation for the guest teachers we had completing an art project on Friday. The students were introduced to the Fibonacci Sequence. The sequence is as follows. Ask your child to explainthe rule to you, and what would come next in the pattern:
0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21
On Friday we had the pleasure of having guest teachers in our classroom. They showed us some examples of where we can find the Fibonacci sequence in the world, and then taught us a drawing technique to create our own Fibonacci spiral, which we turned into snails!

Health and Wellness/Art: The month of November we focused on the Courage Teaching of the Seven Sacred Teachings. We learned about facing our fears and having the courage to stand up for what we believe in. The students wrote down an act of courage on a bear paw, and were encouraged to decorate their paws. Next we examined the work of a Canadian Indigenous artist, Roy Henry Vickers, who created beautiful sunsets and sunrises with black silhouettes in the foreground. The students were introduced to acrylic paint and learned blending techniques. They really enjoyed using this paint. We attached our bear paws to our sky paintings.

Our Learning:
Literacy: We have been learning about triple-scoop and sensory details words this past month. We have been going on nature walks to utilize our 5 senses while outdoors to help us gather ideas. We have read books about the seasons and books by Indigenous authors to help us appreciate our unique relationships with the land. Students have begun working on a writing piece about their favourite natural place. The class was invited to use loose parts or draw this week to create images of our favourite places and orally share our ideas with our seat partners. We have begun the planning phase, and will continue with the drafting and revising phase next week. Students will be challenged to use their knowledge of triple-scoop and sensory detail words to make this piece interesting and unique.
Math: We have begun reviewing adding and subtracting skills this week. Students were invited to solve different word problems and share their unique strategies with each other. We will use the strategies they already know and learn some new ones to add and subtract 6-digit numbers.
Social Studies: Students have begun creating their own e-book about an Alberta region of their choice. Some students are working with a partner, while others have chosen to work independently. Students are using the flipbooks they created, as well as books and the internet to research their region. They will be researching and sharing information about the landforms, climate, cities, resources, vegetation and tourism sites within their region, and sharing their findings with the class at a later date.

Chairs will only be permitted at the back of the gym.
· Home Reading: Blue home reading sheets were sent home last week in your child’s green folder or backpack. There is an overview letter on the suggested format and tasks, a reading log page and a read and response page. Please read the overview letter with your child so you both understand the process and expectations. If you would like to borrow books from the school, please let me know. Thank you for your support in making this program a success for your child.
· Veteran’s Food Drive: Running until November 8, Glenbrook School will be accepting non-perishable donations for the Veterans’ Food Drive. Please consider donating to teach our students the importance of giving to others and honouring our Veterans.
Our Learning:
Literacy: This week we practiced paragraph writing using a prompt of our own choice. The students were tasked to create their own plan and paragraph, and edit it using the COPS strategy. Some students wrote about Halloween, others wrote facts about candy or described their dream house.
Later in the week, we read and analyzed the poem “In Flanders Fields.” We learned about the meaning of some of the lines and analyzed the poems for the 3 Rs that comprise poetry: rhyme, rhythm and repetition. Next week, the students will create their own poems based around Remembrance Day learnings, the Courage Teaching, or their own emotions.
Math: We continued learning about the tenths place in place value. This week, we used a number line to help us understand the concept of tenths. This looks similar to a metric ruler, using the milimeter marks as tenths between each centimeter, which represents 1.
Social Studies: We began learning about the 6 regions of Alberta this week, focusing on Rocky Mountain, Foothill, and Grassland. The students drew pictures of the landscapes and wrote down facts relating to each area, including: natural resources, vegetation, wildlife, parks and tourism. Ask your child to share something they learned this week relating to these three regions.
Science: We completed a fun Mystery Science lesson, “What would happen if you didn’t have a skull?” We learned that the skull protects our brain. We looked at visuals of different skulls and explored our own to learn that our skull has holes in it for our eyes, ears and nose. We also learned that the skull and jawbone are two different bones. To conclude, we created some fun skull masks with moveable jaw bones.

Our Learning:
Math: We began learning about decimals this week, beginning with the tenths place. We looked at different visual examples of fraction wheels and ten-frames to help us understand the concept and related it to fractions. See the following visual example. The first rectangle shows 1 whole and the other shows 2 tenths. That’s 1.2, or one and two tenths, or 1 2/10.
Literacy: This week we brainstormed lists of words to help make our writing more interesting. We came up with great detail words to replace “boring” words like good, bad, mad, happy with “triple-scoop” words, such as excellent, terrible, enraged, wonderful.
Literacy/Health and Wellness: For the month of October, we have been learning about Honesty, one of the Seven Sacred Teachings. This teaching is represented by Sabé, also known as Bigfoot or Sasquatch. The Honesty teaching is symbolized by Sabé because Sabé is believed to be a spiritual creature that knows who it is, and accepts itself. The Honesty teaching tells us that it is important to not lie, gossip, cheat or steal. We must be true to ourselves and others. When we live honestly, we have more peaceful and happy lives. To represent their learning, students created a Four-Square reflection describing what Honesty looks like, sounds like, feels like, and honesty is… Ask your child to share their understanding with you.
Social Studies: This week, we have been exploring maps of Canada, and now focusing in on Alberta. We have begun to map where important cities are in Canada and Alberta. We are now moving into a focus on the regions of Alberta, and will continue this next week.

Our Learning:
Literacy: The students wrote some beautiful and thoughtful words describing what they are grateful for. They used a T-chart planning page where they wrote an action on one side, and what that made them grateful for on the opposite side, then composed these plans into a poem or paragraph. They were pleased to show you these during parent conferences.
Math: This week we continued to work on rounding within 6-digit numbers. We learned about applying rounding to house sales and the concept of benchmark numbers. For example, if a house was priced at $408 999, it would be sensible to round the amount to $400,00, because that is rounded to the closest 100 000. Alternatively, the amount could be rounded to $410 000, as that is the closest 10 000. Each of these are benchmark numbers, and both are acceptable answers, as long as the students explain their reasoning.
The students brought home a place value tangram puzzle on Thursday. This can be put together a few different ways, but one way creates the image of a cat. I will include the answer key below for those interested in completing the task together.
Science: We finished our study of decomposition this week. Students completed their final observations of their decomposition bags. Then, we determined the order of which has decomposed the least to the most, and charted some of our findings throughout the process together. We learned that the addition of water helps things to decompose quickly, with a combination of water and air being the best conditions for decomposition.
Buddies: We got together for the first time this week with our Grade 1 buddies in Mrs. Barber’s class. The Grade 4s were able to demonstrate leadership in playing a get to know you game with their buddies, playing on the playground together, and helping the Grade 1s create some leaf print art.

· Parent Teacher Conferences will occur on Thursday and Friday next week. They will be 15 minutes long, and are an opportunity for families to meet with Mrs. Woods individually to discuss your child’s strengths and stretches in school this year. It is also an opportunity for you to ask me any questions you have. Bookings open Friday (today) through your child’s myCBE account. If you are having trouble booking, please send me an email with a few preferred times and I can book you in.
· The Downie Wenjack Walk occurs next week. This walk honours families affected by residential schools, and aids our collective reconciliation journey through a combination of awareness, education, and action. Our class will be walking on Thursday, October 19. Students are encouraged to wear purple on Thursday to show their support.
Our Learning:
Math: This week we reviewed the concept of rounding. We rounded to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. The poem below was taught to the students to help remember the rounding rules. We also made a rounding hill visual to assist them with remembering when to round down and when to round up. Please ask your child to answer some questions about rounding to show you their knowledge at home.
Literacy: The students continued working on their The Best Part of Me writing this week. We learned the COPS strategy for editing our work (Capitals, Overall look, Punctuation, Spelling) and used it to practice editing. Mrs. Woods helped us to read over our work as well for final edits, and then students learned about typing and organizing a typed document to create their published copies. We look forward to sharing these with you all at Parent Teacher Conferences.
Art: We read the book “Be Who You Are” by Todd Parr and created unique self-portraits in Todd Parr’s visual style, using bold lines and creative colour choices.

Upcoming Events:
· Monday, October 8: No School, Thanksgiving Holiday
· Tuesday, October 10: School Council Meeting, 6pm
· Wednesday, October 18: School Photos
· Thursday, October 19: Fun Lunch
· Thursday and Friday, October 19 and 20: Parent Teacher Conferences, Friday No School for Students
Our Learning:
Math: This week, we have been reviewing place value to 100 000s. We have written numbers in standard, expanded and word form. For example:
Standard form: 652 807
Expanded form: 600 000 + 50 000 + 2000 + 800 + 0 + 7
Word form: six hundred fifty-two thousand eight hundred seven
Math Game: Place Value War
· You can play place value war at home with your child, using scrap paper for recording, a writing tool, and a die or cards. If using cards, remove the face cards. Ace would represent 1, 10 would represent 0.
· To begin, divide paper into 6 sections, labeling the sections as follows:
100 000 10 000 1000 100 10 1
· Players take turns rolling the die or drawing a card. Whatever number is rolled or flipped, each player will write that number in one section of their chart. Once placed, a number cannot change spots. The player with the largest number after all six numbers have been placed wins the round.
· Challenge your child to read the number aloud to you, or write it in expanded form.
Literacy: We began working on a writing piece based on the book “The Best Part of Me”. This is a book written by children about their favourite body part, and why it is their favourite. The students created a plan and did their first draft this week. Next week, students will edit their work and create a good copy. We look forward to sharing this piece with you at Parent/Teacher Conferences.
Science: Today we observed our decomposition bags for the second time. We noticed things are beginning to break down, become soft or liquidy, and some bags are growing mold! We believe so far the best conditions for decomposition seem to be a combination of water and air, but bags with water and no air are also beginning to decompose. So far, bags in the light vs the dark are decomposing at the same rate.
Art: This week we had some fun with oil pastels and scratch sticks. We first used the pastels to fully colour in the sections of the leaves. Then, we used sticks to scratch or etch patterns into the leaves.

Upcoming Events:
· Friday, September 29: No School in lieu of Truth and Reconciliation Day
· Monday, October 8: No School, Thanksgiving Holiday
· Wednesday, October 18: School Photos
· Thursday and Friday, October 19 and 20: Parent Teacher Conferences
Information/Reminders:

· Picture Day flyers will be sent home Monday in your child’s green folder. Please return green folders on Tuesday.
Our Learning:
Math: To wrap up our current learning around statistics, the students were tasked to create their own survey question, survey classmates, and graph the results. Ask your child to tell you about their process and what they learned from their graphs.
Our next short topic is a review of telling time on digital and analogue clocks.
Literacy/Health and Wellness/: This week we focused our learning around the purpose of Orange Shirt Day and Truth and Reconciliation Day. We read the book “Shi-shi-etko”, in which a young girl is preparing to go away from home to attend a residential school. With her grandmother, she creates a memory bag to help her remember her home and family while she is away. We noticed that many of the items in Shi-shi-etko’s bag were natural items, and discussed the close relationship Indigenous people have with the land. I shared my own memory bag with the students, which included different natural items that remind me of special people, places and interests in my life. The students then worked on a paper copy of their own memory bags, and brought in one thing of their own to share with the class.
Art: The whole school worked together to create a collaborative handprint tree that is displayed near the office to recognize Orange Shirt Day. Our class used their handprints to a) write 5 reasons why they matter; or b) write 5 things every child deserves. We had thoughtful discussions about children’s rights and what makes them important.
Science: Today we put together bags of waste so we can observe the process of decomposition. We created 8 bags filled with food scraps, cardboard, and some materials we wonder whether they will decompose or not. Each bag is under different control measures involving water, air, and light, as well as one we have placed outside. We are excited to observe these bags over the next few weeks to learn the best conditions for decomposition.

Science: We spent some time this week with 4A being illustrative scientists as we studied plants. First, we studied some indoor plants and herbs. We drew detailed pictures of the plants, labeling and describing the different parts we noticed. Students were then prompted to answer questions about the plant, such as:
I wonder…
It reminds me of…
I notice…
On Wednesday, we went outside to learn about some local trees that grow near our school. The students studied and drew sticks, leaves, bark and pinecones. We will revisit the park throughout the seasons to notice how the local vegetation changes throughout the seasons of the school year.
Literacy/Health and Wellness: This month, we began learning about the Seven Sacred Teachings. Each teaching is represented by an animal, and teaches us how we can live our lives respecting animals, people and the environment – every living thing. This month, we have focused on the teaching of Respect. We connected this to the CBE Indigenous Framework, learning and sharing how we can respect our bodies, minds, spirit and hearts. Ask your child to share one thing they have learned this month regarding respecting themselves, others, or nature. Below is a photo of our collaborative art display from last week.
Thursday is International Day of Peace. To recognize this day, the students created pinwheels. On one side, they recorded what peace means to them, describing what it tastes, feels, smells, looks and sounds like. The students enjoyed using their pinwheels outside on this windy day with their friends.

Math: We learned how to survey a population of classmates to gather data to create pictographs and bar graphs this week. We will carry on with statistics next week, creating, reading and interpreting different graphs.
Literacy: The class learned an organization strategy for writing called 5 Finger Details. This asks students to organize their thoughts under 5 headings: Topic, Detail, Detail, Memory, Feeling. Students used this plan to write about their favourite season. Ask your child to tell you about their writing.
Art/Health and Wellness: We have been busy this week putting our own personal touches on the classroom, creating name tags, posters and art work to display within our room. We look forward to having families in next week at Meet the Teacher Night to view our classroom.
Today, Friday, we spent a lot of the day with our Grade 4A friends in Ms. Handelsman’s class. We had gym together playing a fun game of bench ball. Next we read the story “The Dot” in honour of International Dot Day. We created a large concentric art display of dots, with key words regarding what respect means to each of us. You can check it out at Meet the Teacher Night!
