Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship

Digital citizenship is about having the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to demonstrate responsible and respectful behavior when participating in digital environments. Classroom teachers discuss expectations for the responsible use of electronic devices with their students at the beginning of each school year. These expectations are reviewed over the course of the year when necessary.

It is important to note that students require the direct permission from their parents, as well as their teachers, when bringing electronics to school for educational purposes. For security purposes we ask that students give the electronic device(s) to the teacher upon entering the classroom at the start of the day. The teacher will keep the device in a safe place and give it to the student when required. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for the device back at the end of the school day.

No photos, videos or audio recordings are to be made at school without the expressed consent of the classroom teacher.

Acceptable Use Policy

What is an Acceptable Use policy?

An Admirable Use policy positively describes the ways in which we would like to see students and teachers using social media for learning.

  • Do use our network to demonstrate your understanding of learning outcomes in creative and thoughtful ways.
  • Do use our network to learn how to communicate in the same manner that will be asked of you when you graduate and emerge into the digital world of this century.
  • Do use our network to share your achievements and excitement about learning with your parents.
  • Do use our network to demonstrate what you really do know instead of what you don’t know.
  • Do use our network to support self-paced and just-in-time learning. Learn as you need to and learn thoroughly.
  • Do use our network to think critically and build information literacy skills.
  • Do use our network to explore deep questions that you have in relation to learning and life.
  • Do use our network to find rich and reliable sources of information that you will learn how to cite and share with others.
  • Do use our network to learn and practice digital etiquette in a compassionate manner.
  • Do use our network to have fair access to an electronic society so that you are ready to participate fully in it when you graduate from our educational system.
  • Do use our network to in a manner that will support your constantly growing understanding of new digital technologies. Learn how to learn anytime anywhere!
  • Do use our network to in a manner that protects your privacy, safety and freedom of thought. Be responsible for protecting the rights of others as well.
  • Do use our network to in a manner that protects your own health and wellness. The Internet is a fascinating place and so is the real world.

Internet Awareness for Parents and Students

Early in September, and throughout the school year, teachers will have discussions with students about digital citizenship. We encourage families to continue this learning in the home.

Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping our students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens.

Visit the CBE website to learn more about how we support students to develop online safety skills and be good digital citizens.
