Weekly Update September 29, 2022

Dear parents/guardians,

Welcome one and all to the end of the first month of the 2022-23 school year! Looking back on the month I hope that you and your child(ren) felt welcome at G.P. Vanier, and that your child has come home more than once with exciting stories about things they have done or are looking forward to at our school.

Today at Vanier we are recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation; with teachers and students engaging in tasks that connect with the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. This is a day that the Federal Government has set aside to honour the children who never returned home and the Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. While we know that this can be a difficult conversation for both students and adults, we also feel it is important and needs to be part of a wider, more on-going conversation. As we encourage parents to be an active participant in their child(ren)’s education, if you have any questions or comments that we can address please do not hesitate to reach out to your child(ren)’s teachers, Mme. Laurelle or myself.

We will also be leveraging the work that is done today next month with the creation of our student diversity council. We will begin promoting this group to students next month in an effort to create a space where students can share their stories, in their own voices, with the adults in the building (including Mme. Laurelle and I) and with other students. I hope this will become part of the culture at G.P. Vanier and lend itself to better recognizing the diverse group of students we have attending this wonderful school.

I wish you all a wonderful long weekend and I will see the students back here on Monday.

Bonne fin de semaine,

Chad Edmonds – Principal Georges P. Vanier

Parent Council

GP Vanier had their first Parent Council meeting last Tuesday, September 27thWe had a turnout of over 25 families, who attended both virtually and in-personThis group is imperative in the functioning of a school and is a fantastic opportunity for parents to get more involved in their child’s schoolFor more information, please visit our website: https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/gpvanier/get-involved/school-council/pages/default.aspx

The next meeting will take place on October 25th at 7pm.  More information will follow in the coming weeks.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders

When you are dropping off or picking up a student at ANYTIME, please DO NOT park or come into the gravel Staff Parking Area. Please park in the paved Visitors Parking/Student Drop Off area that is clearly marked with signage. We have staff arrive at various times and end up not having their parking spot when they arrive as a parent/guest to the school has parked there. If vehicles that are not permitted to be in the Staff Parking area are there, it creates problems for our deliveries as well.

Thank you for following these instructions.
