Dear Lynx Families,
I would like to start off the weekly update with some highlights of the last week. All 4 of our grade 9 students enjoyed time at the Calgary Zoo for some Science learning. It is wonderful that we can again take students on these trips and thank you to all the volunteers who joined us.
Secondly, a big congratulations to our senior girls’ volleyball team who captured the division title by defeating Queen Elizabeth on Wednesday evening. I had a chance to speak with some of the girls the next day and they were still beaming when asked about the victory. I also do want to congratulate our other boys' and girls’ volleyball teams on their seasons. I spoke numerous times with their coaches, and they were so pleased with the growth the players made. Finally, a big thank you to the parents who came out to help coach: Shannon Kelsick and Ophelia Liew.
Staying on the athletics news, our wrestling teams have begun tryouts and we are seeing some encouraging numbers in attendance. If your child is interested in joining this team, please have them connect with Mr. Cheng here at school. We also have a group of volunteers helping out with this team.
I believe that having large, positive engagement of the wider community is an essential piece of running a successful school. As you see above, our Lynx community is vital in allowing us to provide a rich, diverse program for your children. There are so many ways to get involved with our school: athletics; field trips; parent council; band council; fund raising activities; guest speaking to our classes; and so many more. Remember, this is your school, and your diversity is one of the things that makes this such a great place to be. If you would like to get involved, please reach out to your child(ren)’s teacher and start the conversation. If you would like to volunteer, please call the main office and Ms. Gilkes or Ms. Stotz can begin the process.
Also, as you would have read earlier this week, G.P. Vanier has been declared in a respiratory illness outbreak. As the notification reads: “this is due to a large number of students sick with respiratory symptoms.” It goes on to list recommendations that families and schools should take to minimize the spread of illness.
I know I have received emails regarding masks at school. While there is no mask mandate from either the province or CBE, we do support family choices with masking. We are willing and able to supply students with masks if they request them. If families would like us to provide them with masks, I ask that they contact the school, and we can send some home with their child(ren). Masks have always been available to students as well throughout the day from the office.
Just as I stated above, this is your school, and being able to have families join us is a cornerstone of us being part of your community. Working in collaboration, as a community, is imperative in creating a healthy environment and I want to thank each of you for working with us to create this.
Bonne fin de semaine,
Chad Edmonds – Principal GP Vanier
Hello GPV Parents/Guardians!
Welcome to our first Parent-Teacher Conference of the year. As I said in my earlier email, we have unfortunately had to move all these interview times to online. Some guidelines and suggestions as you book your Conferences:
- Book your conference with the desired teacher. Your student may have multiple teachers teaching core subjects that you need to book separately.
- Log onto a computer a couple of minutes prior to your scheduled conference time so you have time to ensure that there are no technical difficulties.
- Please be aware of your meeting time and keep to it as we have back-to-back interviews.
- You will only be able to book 1 time slot/teacher so we can make sure all parents that wish to book with teachers get the chance.
- Please be sure to book with all of the teachers you wish to see.
We look forward to seeing everyone online!
Online Learning Environment
A reminder that your child has an online learning environment for their learning. Please remind your child to check this space if they are wanting to catch up on materials or review information. If your child misses school for any reason (absent, late, illness, appointment) please remind them to check their online environment (Google Classroom or D2L).
The pick-up for CocoBrooks orders is still on Thursday, November 24th , after school, this has not changed despite the virtual conferences. The pick-up spot will be on the North side of the school on 32nd NE at the Blue doors. We will send a reminder email on Thursday as well.
