Weekly Update November 25

Dear Lynx Families,

I hope the over the last few days (and evenings) you have had a chance to connect with your child(ren)’s teachers. While it was unfortunate we did not get a chance to welcome you all into our building, I am so pleased with the numbers of families that did meet with teachers. In many cases teachers were fully booked and many even arranged meetings during break time, early in the morning or after interviews ended. Family involvement is so crucial to student achievement and engagement in school, so thank you to all parents who took time out of their lives to meet with us. If you did not have a chance to meet with us, please reach out to your child(ren)’s teacher(s) and we would be pleased to arrange another time to meet with you.

This week also marked the start of our High School tours. We will take students to their designated high school if it has an open house for students during class hours. Thursday afternoon I had the opportunity to join a group of Vanier students at Crescent Heights for their tour.  I encourage parents to take the opportunity to visit these high schools for their evening Open Houses to get a sense of the wonderful programming they offer, to familiarize themselves with the building, to meet with administrators and teachers, and to ask pertinent questions about their child’s next three years. We will continue to send along messages from the High Schools as we receive them.

Also, a reminder that Tuesday, November 29th will be our monthly Parent Council Meeting. It will start at 7pm and they usually run for about an hour. The meeting will be hybrid, so we would be happy to see you in the building or virtually. A link is found below, and another email will be forthcoming early next week with the agenda.

Finally, there is a lot going on here in the coming weeks so please read the notifications below.

Bonne fin de semaine,

Chad Edmonds – Principal G.P. Vanier

Lost and Found

We have gathered many unclaimed student items over the past few weeks (hoodies, jackets, water bottles, etc.). These will be laid out on tables for students to retrieve over the next couple of weeks. Please encourage your child(ren) to check the lost and found for any items belonging to them beforehand. Any unclaimed items will be donated to charity after December 9th.

Vaccinations

Monday, November 28th is Grade 6 Vaccination Day. If you are in grade 6, the AHS nurses are asking that student please wear short sleeve shirts, have a full breakfast and bring a snack for post vaccination.

A lot of families are asking about the fee for the upcoming in school Fitset Ninja course taking place on December 7 & 8.  The fee has been added to your child’s PowerSchool account.  The description of the fee is as follows: Field Trip – Active Living – Challenge Course – In School – Ninja Course Dec 7 & 8 2022.

French Language Exchange Opportunities

We are pleased to share two opportunities for Gr. 8/9 students to learn more about short-term and longer-term programs in Quebec and France, throughout the spring and summer of 2023. Please note that these programs are not CBE sanctioned opportunities.

Explore is an intensive language immersion program that provides opportunities for English-speaking students to study French, and for French-speaking students to study English. For participants 16 and older, Explore sessions are offered during the spring or summer, which last between 31 and 33 days. For 13- to 15-year-olds, three-week summer sessions are available. Some virtual Explore sessions are offered for those who are unable to participate in person. The program contributes $2, 800 for each participant aged 16 years and older and $2,000 for participants 13 to 15 years of age to cover the costs of tuition fees, instructional materials, meals, and accommodation.
