Weekly Update January 13

Dear Lynx Families,

Happy New Year! It has been great to see how quickly students and teachers have picked up where they left off. Just this week we have seen badminton tryouts begin, students busily finishing up semester 1 work and our grade 9 students begin to connect more with their future high schools.

On that note, over the next few weeks we are welcoming guidance teams from most of the high schools that our students will be attending. We have asked that students please check the Grade 9 Google Classroom that Mr. Cheng has created to keep families informed of High School information. If you do have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school. We know that this can be a stressful time for many students (and their families) so we will do our best to be supportive and answer whatever questions we can.

While our grade 9 students begin looking forward to high school, Mme Laurelle and I are busily connecting with prospective students for our late French Immersion program. We have started going out to visit different schools, and along with some student representatives, we are speaking with Grade 6 students about our school and program. While we will do our best to connect with interested families, the best messengers we have are our current students and families. Please feel free to let other families know about our school, and if they have any questions or are interested in attending G.P. Vanier next year, contact the school to speak with Mme. Laurelle or me.

We will be hosting an open house for just our prospective late immersion students on February 8th (see below), while our open house for the community English program, the continuing French Immersion and the Learning & Literacy program will be May 25th. More information will be available about both of these evenings in the weeks ahead.

Bonne fin de semaine,

Chad Edmonds – Principal GP Vanier

Grade 9 Farewell Celebration Bottle Drive

Please collect your empty recyclable refundable containers and bring them to Georges P. Vanier School to help fund the Grade 9s Farewell Celebration. Please bring in anything you can, even if you are not the guardian of a Grade 9 student (any little bit will help!!)

We will have our first round of bottle collection this week: January 10-12TH,

We will have a second round of bottle collection next week of January 16-20TH.

Thank you in advance from the grateful Grade 9 teachers and students.

2023-2024 Hybrid Open House for our Late French Immersion Program

We are already in planning mode for the next school year! Our Georges P. Vanier Open House for our late French Immersion program for 2023-2024 will take place on Wednesday, February 8th from 6:30 - 7:30pm. We will have a presentation that will be shown virtually, and we are inviting families to come in person as well. If you know any students in grade 6 who are interested in the Late French Immersion program, please pass along this message to any friends/family who may be interested.  We will be visiting some of our grade 6 feeder schools in January.

Grade 9 Eastern Canada Fundraiser

The Grade 9 French Immersion students at Georges P. Vanier are raising money for their upcoming Eastern Canada Trip in April.  We have partnered with Big Chief Meat Snacks which is a local Calgary owned and operated company that has been making meat snacks for over 50 years. The products are made with 100% Canadian beef that come in a variety of flavors, are shelf stable, and gluten free.  Big Chief Meat Snacks provides 34-40% profit on orders, which is AMAZING!!!

We will be accepting orders between January 16th – 31st, 2023. To order, forms are available at the front office or you can use the online platform:  https://fundraisers.bigchiefmeatsnacks.com/register?page=97e0f6be-25f4-4ae4-9a68-c73ed33d0a85
