Weekly Update January 20

Dear Lynx families,

January is an important month for teachers to work with their students in ensuring that all learning tasks have been submitted for assessment. Please verify your child’s completion of tasks through Power School and work together with the teacher if there is lack of clarity on whether work has been completed and graded. Report cards for Semester 1 will be viewable in electronic format on Jan. 30th.

Congratulations to our Lynx Wrestlers this year. Our coaches Mr. Cheng, Dr. Douma and Mme Anna have been training for the last couple of months. We hosted a successful tournament here at Vanier on Monday and next week is Divisionals. We wish our athletes the best of luck!

This week we have also been busy visiting schools to drum up support for our late french immersion program. Mme. Laurelle and I, with student alumni, visited: Simon Fraser, Cambrian Heights, Hillhurst, Rosemont, Alex Munro and Huntington Hills. We also hosted Simons Valley’s grade 6s on Friday. A big thank you to all the students who represented Vanier so well. The feedback we received was how impressed our prospective students were with your presentation and ability to answer questions about Vanier.

We will be hosting an open house for our Late French Immersion program on February 8th, from 6:30-7:30pm. If any current families know of families who are curious about the program, please extend this invitation  to them or have them contact the school with any questions they may have.

Finally, I wanted to extend my gratitude to the GP Vanier community as a whole. I have been contacted numerous times this year by other Principals, family members, or by those who live and work in the community about how impressed they are with how well you represent our school. It speaks volumes about the character of a student when their positive behaviour is commented on by strangers; and this behaviour serves as an example for others and goes a long way towards making GP Vanier a better community.

Bonne fin de semaine,

Chad Edmonds – Principal GP Vanier school

On behalf of the Grade 9 French Immersion students, we really appreciate your contribution and thank you so much for your support!!

Option Changes

Students are now able to access their option classes for semester 2 via PowerSchool. The vast majority of students received options that aligned with the course requests they provided. For those students requesting a change, option change forms will be made available the week of February 6th to February 8th. They will be due at the end of the day Wednesday, February 8th.

Yearbook Update

The yearbook club is busily putting together this year’s GP Vanier 2022-23 school yearbook. To have the yearbook ready in time for year-end work here must be completed and submitted to the publisher over the next few months. If you do not want your child’s picture published in the yearbook, please contact Mr. Cheng at mscheng@cbe.ab.ca

If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook, these can be purchased through your account on PowerSchool. If you need assistance with this, please contact the front office.

School Council Meeting January 31

Our next school council meeting will feature one of our Learning Leaders, Ms. Johnson, who will share information about Assessment and Reporting. The focus will be on the 1-4 indicator scale, and rubrics that our Physical Education team has created this year.

Family Literacy Day

Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27th to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Since 1999, thousands of schools, libraries, literacy organizations and other community groups have taken part in the initiative. ABC creates free learning and promotional resources for anyone that wants to get involved. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well. Family Literacy Day 2023 Theme: Celebrate your Heritage. Canada is a great diverse country full of different cultures. Take time to explore and learn about your heritage. Celebrate what you’ve found and share your culture with others. There’s no better way to learn about your family, than together, as a family. You can find more information about Family Literacy Day 2023 at https://abclifeliteracy.ca/all-programs/family-literacy-day/
