Weekly Update February 3

Hello Lynx families,

I hope students are enjoying the shorter week as we begin semester 2. I also hope that parents have had a chance to look over their child(ren)’s report card. These are available online, via the PowerSchool website.

We will be holding our parent/teacher conferences on March 9th and 10th. More information will come closer to the date. We are hoping that at least one of the days will be in person.

With the change of semester, students have started new complementary courses, except for the multi-cluster options, which begin on Monday. For students who would like to switch their complementary course, forms will be available at the office on Monday morning. Students need to fill these out and have these signed by a parent/guardian before returning them. We will do our best to accommodate all requests, however, due to numerous factors this is not always possible. Parents/guardians can also use the PowerSchool website or app to view their child(ren)'s current course load.

This upcoming Wednesday evening we will be hosting families who are interested in attending our Late French Immersion program in grade 7. If any of you know of families who are interested, please pass this invitation along or have them reach out to us at the school for more information.

In recognition of Black History Month, over the course of February, teachers and students will be undertaking lessons and assignments that honour the legacy of Black people in Canada and their communities.

The 2023 theme for Black History Month in Canada is: “Ours to tell”. This theme represents both an opportunity to engage in open dialogue and a commitment to learning more about the stories of Black communities in Canada and what they have to say about their histories, successes, sacrifices and triumphs.

One of my goals at Vanier is to encourage all students to learn more about one another; by empowering students to use their voice to share their stories in the hopes that it will make Vanier a more inclusive, aware and welcoming place for all. I hope that what students experience this month is one of many such learning opportunities.

Bonne fin de semaine,

Chad Edmonds – Principal GP Vanier

An Invitation to Learn More About Healthy Sexuality Development

Dear Parents / Guardians,

In CBE, we believe that you can inspire your kids to make healthy lifestyle choices and increase protective factors. However, in order to do so, the right tools and information are needed.

On February 7, the CBE’s Well-Being team will host our third (of five) free webinar sessionswith the Sexual and Reproductive Health Team from Calgary Zone of Alberta Health Services on the topic of Healthy Sexual Development.

You are invited to join us at the virtual session from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Child and Youth Well-Being Series for Families and Caregivers  Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2023 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

The last two sessions will focus on Understanding Anxiety (April 4, 2023) and Understanding Social Media (May 2, 2023). Communication about these two sessions will be distributed separately.

Thank you for your time and consideration. You are a key partner in your child’s education and student well-being is critically linked to student achievement.

Loonies for Literacy

Our school is participating in Loonies for Literacy again this year.

Last year our school community raised $862.00.  These funds have allowed us to purchase popular new books students have requested.  We will continue to take student book requests to ensure we are providing titles that will keep them interested and engaged.

We hope this will continue to promote a love of reading for our students here at GP Vanier.

If you would like to donate, please click on the link below and share with friends and family you think would like to support this amazing initiative.  The campaign will run for from February 1 to April 23. 2023.  We have set our schools goal at $1,000 and would love to see the same community support to make this happen.

https://educationmatters.akaraisin.com/looniesforliteracy2023/GeorgesPVanier

To make literacy more equitable across the city, for every dollar raised by a school during this campaign, another dollar will be provided to a school in need through contributions from community partners like yourself.

Learning to read opens up a new world of information, imagination, and communication; literacy is essential to developing self-esteem, an understanding of the world, and one’s place in it. Please join us in ensuring that no student falls behind.
