Expectations with Substitute Teachers

Most school days, there is a substitute teacher in the building. We depend on substitute teachers to fill in for teachers who are absent for various reasons. We treat substitute teachers as guests in the school and we expect students to be even more polite and even better behaved than usual since the substitute teacher does not know names, routines, or procedures. Teachers will establish protocols for students to follow when they have a substitute teacher, and students will be held to a high standard of behaviour.

Behaviour on the Bus

Students riding on the bus must remember that school rules also apply when riding the bus. Students are responsible for their conduct to the bus driver and through the driver to the Administration of the school. Continued violation may lead to the loss of riding privileges or to suspension from the school.

  1. The driver is in full charge of the bus and his/her directions must be obeyed.
  2. The driver will report any misconduct to the Administration of the school concerned who will then take appropriate action.
  3. The driver may assign specific seats to students at any time.
  4. While the bus is in motion, students must not extend arms or heads out of the windows
  5. Students must not throw paper or other waste materials on the floor or out of the windows of the bus.
  6. While on the bus, students must conduct themselves in a quiet and courteous manner, showing consideration for the comfort and safety of others.
  7. Scuffling, fighting, smoking, and the use of obscene or disrespectful language on the bus are prohibited.
  8. Students will not distract the bus driver with unnecessarily loud conversation.
  9. Students causing willful damage to a bus will be held financially accountable.
  10. When leaving the bus, students must observe the instructions of the bus driver. They should not cross the road without having a clear view in both directions.
  11. Only individuals who are charter bus students can ride another bus if a note (signed by the office) from a parent / guardian is presented to the bus driver.

The principal (or designate) will keep a record of all bus misconduct reports and will take whatever corrective actions appear warranted. This could include suspension of the student’s transportation privileges.

Illegal Substances

Smoking is not permitted in the school, on the school grounds, or across the street in front of neighbouring property. Smoking is illegal for anyone under the age of 16 and is therefore prohibited at all times. The consumption of any illegal substance, including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs is not permitted. Students caught smoking or using illegal substances will be sent home and must return with one or both parents/guardians to school before re-admittance.  Suspension may be a consequence and police intervention may also be required for a student caught smoking or using illegal substances.

Unsafe Behaviour on School Property

  • Running in building or sliding down banisters
  • Pushing, kicking or tackling
  • Horseplay
  • Spitting
  • Throwing or propulsion of any object including snowballs

Disrespectful Language

We strive to maintain a culture of respect for all. Students have the right to be treated respectfully and have a responsibility to treat all others with respect. Disrespectful language is regarded as unacceptable on school property. If students engage in disrespectful language, teachers will contact home, and administration may become involved as a part of the CBE Progressive Student Discipline Regulation.

Harassment is defined as any persistent behavior that humiliates or harms another person. At Georges P. Vanier, we support students in learning appropriate ways to communicate and interact. Our expectation is that students will adhere to the CBE Student Code of Conduct at all times.

Prohibited Items

These include: lighters, matches, knives, lasers, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, drug paraphernalia, and any item that could be considered a weapon or is being used as a weapon. Possession of these items could result in suspension and possible expulsion.

The use of skateboards and rollerblades on CBE property is prohibited. If a student uses one of those items as a method of transportation, they need to store them in the student kiosk.
