Principal's Message

Friday, April 21

Dear Lynx Families,
For those families celebrating Eid, we hope you enjoy your celebrations, and the time you spend with family and friends.
We welcomed incoming late immersion students from around Calgary on Wednesday for Mat Mailandt and a tour of the building. Grade 6 students had the opportunity to learn simple phrases, meet other students who will be joining the program and have a short tour of the school. They learned that “making mistakes” is part of the learning process as they begin their journey in Late French Immersion.
Our Grade 8 English program students visited James Fowler High School this week. The purpose was to give the students a taste of Option classes at this next level of schooling. The students asked many inciteful questions throughout the trip and on the walk back to school.
Basketball season is underway, and our teams continue to improve. Congratulations to all athletes who have represented Vanier at our host schools and in our building. A reminder to our fans who are cheering on our teams that profanity and disrespectful comments will not be tolerated, and you will be asked to leave. I know the players and coaches appreciated hearing the “Go Vanier Go!” on Monday night. We host our next games on May 3.
We wish some of our grade 9 French Immersion students and 5 of our teachers “Bon voyage!” They left for the Eastern Canada Trip this morning at 4:00. They will have the opportunity to visit Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City. Amusez-vous!
Bonne weekend tout le monde!
Track & Field Try-Outs Coming Up!
Track and Field season is quickly approaching with practices starting the week of May 1st!
Vanier encourages as many students to participate as possible, as attending a Track and Field Meet is such a fun experience! In order to be eligible to attend the Track Meet on Wednesday, June 14th, students must attend at least three practices for the events they wish to compete in. Coaches will track attendance and results during practices to determine which students will represent Vanier at the Meet. A single student can compete in up to three separate events at the Meet.
More information about when practices will be held for specific events will be released during the last week of April. Please ensure your student(s) has returned their Athletic Try-Out form in order to attend practices. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Johnson at
Soccer in French
Interested in joining a soccer team and speaking French? Here is a great opportunity to play on a French-speaking soccer team. If you need help registering or navigating the website (as the website is in French), ask your child or email Mme Aristou (
Conversation With Constable Shaw
Our School Resource Office, Constable Shaw, would like to connect with our community in a unique way. Starting next week, slips will be available for students to write down wonderings and questions they would like to ask a police officer. The questions can be submitted anonymously or students can write their name. A box will be set-up in the office and outside Mr. Cheng's office for students to drop-off their slips. The answers will be posted on a bulletin board in our hallway, and we will have an opportunity for students to hear answers in person. We are thrilled to be piloting this new idea in our school with Constable Shaw.
Students have begun their Options Choices for next year in grades 6, 7 & 8. Through the PowerSchool portal, students are choosing their top four courses for next year. We are excited to offer similar choices to this year including Art, Band, Music, 3D Animation and Construction. Some new choices include FSL for students in the English program, Dance and Photography. We do our best for the students to have their top courses as their Options for the year, but it is not a guarantee. Courses will ultimately be decided by student choice, and those with low enrollment will not be offered. Ask your grade 6, 7 or 8 child what courses they are keen to explore next school year! Students will be selecting courses this week and next week.
LitCon 2023 is the Calgary Public Library's Literary Arts Festival open to students from Grades 4 to 12, and is presented in partnership with the Alexandra Writers' Centre Society.  The festival will run from Tuesday, May 30 to Friday, June 2 and students will have both virtual and in-person opportunities to explore their passions for writing, reading, poetry, and even game design. Teachers can register their classes for free virtual events such as writing workshops and author talks.
There is also an in-person opportunity that students can register for (using their library card) that will occur at the Central Library on Saturday, June 2.  Registration for LitCon events can be found at
