Weekly Update May 6

Hello Lynx Families,
Athletics are in full-swing and running-ahead here at Vanier. The badminton team had a tournament at Repsol this week and showed great spirit! Congratulations to the students and coaches: Mr. Park, Mme. Cosgrove, Ms. Cote & Ms. Suelzle. I would also like to send a big thank you to all our athletes. It was brought to my attention that administrators from other schools commented on our athletes’ spirit and excellent behavior.
Track and Field practices are more consistent with the snow all gone. In grade 6, the arrival of the hatching eggs has brought excited chirping from the students and chicks. All classes in the school have had the opportunity to view this process thanks to video feeds that were shared. We would also like to congratulate the students who participated in the Math Competition this week. Lots of exciting times here at GPV!
Bon weekend!

Bike to school
It is so uplifting that as we see the weather improves, we have more students getting to school by bike.  I know that school start time can be a busy time as cars, pedestrians and now bikes arrive. Just a friendly reminder to all to please be extra cautious around the school. I am aware that our school is located on a busy road utilized by many outside our school community, but a little awareness goes a long way!

Covid 19 Update
The Alberta Daily Health Checklist is still in effect. Thanks to all who have done their part so that we can keep our school community safe and healthy.

Grade 9 Celebration Bottle Drive
Thank you all for your support. We had an incredible amount of refundable bottles collected, and we will continue to accept cash donations in the office. Merci!

Track & Field
It is not too late to encourage your child to participate in our Track and Field season! Practices are going on weekly until our Track Meet on June 14th. Students must attend at least three practices for the event(s) they wish to compete in. Please check the school website for practice times, dates, and coaches. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Johnson at jdjohnson@cbe.ab.ca

Loonies for Literacy – A message from the G.P. Vanier Library
Our school is participating in Loonies for Literacy. We will be letting the students make a list of books they would like to see in the library. We hope this will help promote a love of reading for our students here at GP Vanier.

If you would like to donate, please click on the link below and share with friends and family you think would like to support this amazing campaign. The campaign will run for the whole month of May. We have set our school goal at $1,000 and would love to see community support to make this happen.

Loonies for Literacy is an initiative to celebrate the books and stories students love. Partnering with local authors, community members, and Calgary Board of Education schools, EducationMatters is raising funds to invest into school literacy programs for Calgary Public Schools, while also generating awareness of the fundamental importance of literacy.  The campaign will run all through the month of May with students raising funds for their own school.   To make literacy more equitable across the city, for every dollar raised by a school during this campaign, another dollar will be provided to a school in need through contributions from community partners like yourself.  The funds raised by Loonies for Literacy will be used towards literacy programs, including but not limited to:
Books for school libraries

E-books or e-learning resources

Early learning resources

Decodable texts

Supporters can donate on this page https://secure.e2rm.com/p2p/fundraising/373841/participant/5092618/en-CA? or, if they prefer, use the text to donate function and have $5 added to their monthly phone bill. Learning to read opens a new world of information, imagination, and communication; literacy is essential to developing self-esteem, an understanding of the world, and one’s place in it. Please join us in ensuring that no student falls behind.
Thank you for supporting our library, students, and school.
Stephanie Barclay, Librarian
