Attendance

Attendance Line: 403-817-3572 ext. 1 or

Email: griffithwoods@cbe.ab.ca

Please phone the absence late line or email the school before 9 am if your child is going to be away from or late for school.

In the message leave the following information:

  • student’s name (correct spelling)
  • grade
  • teacher
  •  reason they will be away or late  – if no reason is given they will be marked as Absent-Unexcused and you will get a phone call/email.

Attendance is taken daily, once in the morning and once after lunch for our elementary students and each period for our junior high studentsIf your child is going to be late or absent, it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to notify the school. The school must verify all unexplained absences using the automated system.

Punctuality is an important attribute for future success.  It is a matter of courtesy to teachers and fellow students to arrive to school and classes on time. Students arriving late must check in at the office before going to class.

Students who have an appointment or need to leave before regular dismissal time must be signed out at the office. Permission to be excused from school can only be granted by the office upon request by a parent or guardian. Under no circumstances should students leave the school grounds during instructional hours without first obtaining permission from the office.

Extended Absences

It is important to understand that extended absences from school can have a significant impact on student learning and achievement. Families who know their student(s) will be absent from school for greater than 5 days need to obtain an extended absence form from the office and consult with their teachers before leaving. Teachers may provide students with work to be completed prior to and/or while on vacation. This is dependent on many factors including: content that is being covered during the absence; student learning needs; availability of technology; length of absence, etc. Any arrangements regarding student work must be made with the teacher(s) well in advance of the planned vacation time. Students may be required to complete additional work and/or assignments upon their return.

Using the School Telephone

Students have access to the school telephone in the case of an emergency, such as illness. Students are also allowed to phone home if they are uncertain of their schedule after school.

For security reasons, we will not take messages from parents or family friends to direct a child to go to a location other than home, as it is impossible for us to confirm the identity of the caller. Parents are asked to please make these arrangements with their children prior to coming to school, to send letters with children, and to inform the office. Younger students may become confused when a routine changes. Written directions from parents help to alleviate this confusion.

Mobile Phone with Text Message

Cell Phone Use at School

As students have access to the school telephone for emergency use, there is no need for them to use a cell phone during school hours. If your child has a cell phone, they are directed to put it away during instruction hours. The office will ensure that the child receives emergency messages from home.
