Dear Parents and Guardians,
I would like to welcome everyone back to another year of learning at Guy Weadick School. I am pleased to be here working with the incredible teachers, a fine leadership team and the students that fill our building with energy and excitement for learning. As you are aware, Calgary has been a very busy city and we are continuing to enrol students as they arrive to become part of our learning community.
At Guy Weadick School, we come to learn. As we continue our year together, there may be adjustments in school organization or classroom assignments. In all instances, all decisions are made with the lens of “what’s best for students?” We will do our best to keep everyone apprised of any changes in organization should that take place.
Finally, I look forward to meeting students and their families as the year ahead unfolds.
While it has been my pleasure to be your acting Principal during the first part of Ms. Bates maternity leave I will be giving up my spot in this great school Acting Principal Kevin Bauer for the second part of the leave. Kevin is an experienced elementary principal who is excited to be starting at Guy Weadick in August of 2023. Thank you Guy Weadick Community!
Show your Spirit Dress Western!!
All families are welcome to join us for our Annual Stampede Breakfast presented by the Calgary Exhibition and Stamped on Friday June 16, 2023 starting at 8:00. This event is planned to bring our families together in celebration of the tradition of the famous Guy Weadick whom our school is named after and a great year of learning together! The breakfast will start at 8:00 for those families that can come early and will continue serving until 8:40 when we will begin calling students into school for the day. We would like to see a great turn out in their spiffy western attire!
Kindergarten registration at Guy Weadick School began in January 2023 and to date we only have 17 students registered for next year. In order to guarantee your spot for September 2023 and to be considered for your choice of morning or afternoon class we would recommend you go to: My CBE ( https://schoolengage.cbe.ab.ca/#/login) and log in to register your student as soon as possible. We would also like to announce that we are having our Welcome to Kindergarten Open House June 2, 2023 from 1:30 -2:30. Registered families will get an invitation in early May. If you are reading this and are aquainted with someone who has a kindergarten aged (5 years old before Dec. 31, 2023) and lives in temple have them call the Guy Weadick Office at 403-777-6740.
Some of you may have seen a strong police presence around our school on Wed. April 5, 2023 in the morning. We asked for this consult with CPS and City Bylaws as we are very worried about the current state of traffic safety around our school. We are particularly worried about the “jay walking” by students and parents across 55 St NE. CPS has recommended that we do not “help” students to cross 55 St both morning and afternoon anymore. We are requesting that parents drop off their students on the playground side of 55 St. or have them cross at the designated crosswalk at 55 St and Templehill Road NE., moving forward. In collaboration with CPS and Bylaws we are looking at getting a larger drop off zone created on the east side of 55 St. so that your students may enter the school playground more safely. The police also mentioned that illegal “U turns”, parking opposite to the flow of traffic, passing in the school bus zone, and pulling into to the staff parking lot are all dangerous actions that should not occur. Our goal is to make the roads around Guy Weadick safer for everyone.
“Tis the season" for our families of grade 4 and 6's to begin planning for next fall.
On that note, all parents with students who live in Taradale who are currently in grade 4 at Guy Weadick are invited to an Open House at Ted Harrison on March Thursday, March 16th from 6:00-6:45 at Ted Harrison School (215 Taravista Way NE Calgary, AB.) This will be a chance for families to get acquainted with their new middle school for Grades 5-9. We are excited for our current grade 4's and encourage all of our families to attend this open house.
All students currently in grade 6 at Guy Weadick will have an orientation to there designated junior high Dr. Gordon Higgins on Thursday March 16, 2023 at 9:00 in our school Library. These same grade 6 students will tour Dr. Gordon Higgins on March 21, 2023 from 1:00- 2:00pm. All Parents and Guardians of these students are then invited and encouraged to attend an open house at DGH that same evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
Whether you believe it or not Feb 2, 2023 (Ground Hog Day) has come and gone and we are still deep in the throws of winter! Some say the ground hog saw his shadow other say not! We say let’s keep the warm clothes and hats and mittens on for a bit longer so we can enjoy some great outdoor learning activities including outdoor recess! On that note we are getting a very long row of lost and found (but mostly lost) items and we need families who are missing items to come in a check it out!
Ms. Bates has officially started her leave and is waiting patiently for the new arrival to their family. Acting Principal Mr. Bulloch started in the school on January 30, 2023 and is very excited to be at GWS! Please feel free to contact him ( firstname.lastname@example.org) or Ms. Klassen our Assistant Principal with any questions or concerns you may have. We also want to welcome Ms. Bains who will be adding her talents to the Grade 5/6 team until the end of June to support learning in those groupings!
My name is Jeff Campbell and I am the new Interim Principal of Guy Weadick School. I arrived here a couple weeks ago and I’ve been enjoying getting to know our students, parents and staff. Mrs. Bates is set to return from her Parental leave in early June. Guy Weadick is certainly a warm and welcoming place to be!
Thanks so much to the many parents, family members, teachers, and community members for volunteering at our Guy Weadick Casino on March 20 and 21. These Casinos only come up every 18 months, but they bring in a lot of money for us to spend on our students. The money from the last casino was spent on many items such as: New Laptops, Laptop Carts, Smartboards, and lots more!
At this time we extend our thoughts and best wishes to Mrs. Gill who is a grade ½ teacher in room 5. Mrs. Gill is on a medical leave and we have moved the wonderful Mrs. Morrison from her Resource Teacher role into room 5. Also at this time Mrs. Leifer, who teaches grade 2/3 teacher in room 8 is on a medical leave. In her place we welcome Mrs. Patterson who will be their teacher until Mrs. Leifer returns. Please join me in sending our thoughts and best wishes for a speedy recovery to Mrs. Gill and Mrs. Leifer.

Parents and Guardians,
I am writing to on behalf of our School Council. They are preparing for the school's largest fundraiser and need your help.
Like many school, sports and fine arts organizations our school council has agreed to provide volunteers to fill various unpaid jobs at a local casino. These jobs are completed by volunteers and require no previous experience or knowledge about casinos. All volunteers are given training, guidance and direction from helpful and friendly advisors.
Our School Council has agreed to provide 38 volunteers on Sunday March 20 and Monday March 21 for a variety of shifts. The Casino is at Pure Casino Calgary (1420 Meridian Rd NE – SE of Barlow Trail and 16 Avenue NE) and shifts are both during the day and evening (details are available on SignUp Genius).
This fundraiser provides support for many learning opportunities, performances, presentations and extension materials and resources that enrich the school's learning opportunities for students.
To sign up for a shift please go to SignUp Genius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090b44ada923a5f49-pure. You can easily see the available shifts. We need all of these spaces to be filled by parents, guardians, friends and relatives. If you are not able, perhaps a family member or friend would be willing to take a shift.
We are appealing to you now because it is extremely important and the Casino is approaching quickly.
This is your opportunity to support our school and provide resources for students. A shift of a few hours means thousands of dollars of funding for the extras that can make school so much more interesting and engaging.
Please feel free to call the school if you have questions or we can put you in touch with members of our School Council (403 777-6740).
SignUp Genius is easy to use: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090b44ada923a5f49-pure
Thank you and we look forward to seeing you.
