In Pursuit of Knowledge

A major expectation we have for students is that they will become self-motivated, lifelong learners. Process skills as well as content areas are important to each student’s development to achieve academic excellence. A focus is placed upon process skills, problem solving, thinking skills, and questioning strategies. Through careful teacher planning, students will develop the skills and concepts required by Alberta Education. Throughout the development of content and process skills, the main focus is on the student, on his/her strengths, abilities and interests. 

In all areas of the curriculum we want learning to be both meaningful and motivating for students. Students learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process, when they have choices and develop ownership for their own learning.

Celebration of Learning Assemblies

Parents/guardians, families and friends are always welcome at these celebrations of student learning and achievement. Please join us at the school. Information about these events will be provided via this website, school calendars, classroom blogs and syner-voice messages.

School Learning Team

The School Learning Team is comprised of teachers, educational assistants and administrators. We meet on a regular basis to discuss the needs of students and brainstorm ways to further support students who are struggling or excelling in one or more areas of school. Parents are always informed if their child has or will be referred to the School Learning Team.

Completing Assignments / Staying After School

It is often convenient and/or necessary to have children remain after school for a short time to provide extra help to complete assignments, help with a project or take part in extra-circular activities. If a student is going to be detained after school for more than ten minutes the children will be asked to notify their parents/guardians.

Homework

The CBE makes recommendations about homework in policy. Assigning homework is up to the individual teacher, but students and parents are encouraged to set aside some regular time each evening for home study and
recreational reading. Family board games, reading together, going for walks, and discussing current events are great ways to enrich student learning at home.

The nature and amount of home study recommended are as follows:

• Division I (grades 1-3): Parents and teachers should encourage children to read each evening. No formal assignments should be made, but from 5-10 minutes of systematic study per night is recommended.
• Division II (grades 4-6): Formal homework assignments may be given at the discretion of the teacher. They should be within the 20 minute range.

Questions about homework should be directed firstly to your child’s teacher. Ideas for homework are often posted on the daily agendas (classroom blogs).
