HD Cartwright School adheres to the CBE Administrative Regulations for Student Conduct and Safe and Secure Schools. Our goal is to create a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment. We utilize a progressive student discipline approach that includes a continuum of universal, targeted and intensive interventions, supports and consequences at the classroom, school and system levels and builds upon strategies that promote positive behaviours. Students are expected to respect the rights and dignity of others and to proactively participate in promoting and fostering positive relationships with others.
We believe strongly in ensuring the physical, emotional and psychological well-being of each of our students. To ensure the best learning environment for all students, the following inappropriate and unacceptable behaviours will be disciplined up to and including suspension:
- Bullying, harassment, or repeated and hostile physical, verbal, social, and cyber behavior intended to cause harm, fear or distress.
- Being in possession of, under the influence of, or associating with anyone having to do with drugs or alcohol.
- Engaging in or threats of physical violence.
- Using profane language to address any person in the school.
- Involvement in the theft of property.
- Defacing, vandalizing or destroying school property.
- Violating the Code of Conduct while off campus, on the school bus, during a field trip or extracurricular activity.
Should any of the above occur, school administration will work with students and families to ensure the necessary learning has taken place to reduce the likelihood of a similar incident occurring in the future.
As a parent, if your student is expressing concern with regard to another student, please contact your child’s teacher(s) to discuss. Each incident of conflict is handled on a case-by-case basis. When teachers or school administration is reqiured to be involved, we actively seek factual information from multiple sources in an effort to honour each perspective. Please be aware that our definition of bullying encompasses targeted, repeated incidences between one child (or a group of children) toward another.
Smoking and Vaping
Smoking, vaping, associated paraphernalia and lighters in the school or on school grounds is prohibited. During school hours or activities (including lunch break), on or off school premises, the use, possession, active contact with (knowingly being around those that are using or in possession of) or being under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, or illegal drugs is also prohibited. Students with these items, having been in active contact with, or found under the influence will be subject to disciplinary action. All such items will be confiscated.
School Bus Rules & Expectations
Students are expected to maintain the same "Code of Conduct" that they follow at school when they are on the bus. This includes Calgary Transit going to and from school.
- The bus driver is responsible for supporting safe behaviours on the bus.
- The driver reports any misconduct to the Administration of the school.
- While on the bus, students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance to the school code of conduct.
Behaviour in the Community
The way students conduct themselves on the way to and from school speaks strongly about our learning community at H. D. Cartwright. We expect students to demonstrate respect for individuals and property throughout the entire neighbourhood. Students are expected to use appropriate language, to behave respectfully, to take responsibility for disposing of their garbage appropriately and for respecting city bylaws (i.e. smoking, spitting, respect for private property etc.) while they are on their way to and from school: before school, at lunchtime and after school.
