The Alberta School Act requires that students attend school regularly and punctually. Regular attendance at school is not only expected but it is essential to success. Alberta Education allows students to attend for 3 consecutive years or 6 consecutive semesters with an optional 4th year at the discretion of the Principal. We believe there is no single factor more important to a student’s opportunity for success at school than regular attendance. Regular daily attendance is the responsibility of the student and their parent(s) or guardian(s), and engagement while in attendance at Jack James High School is critical to the student’s success.
Students with chronic attendance problems or lack of engagement may lose credits and be withdrawn from their programs. Most of the courses at Jack James are experience based consequently attendance is critical for success. Lack of attendance may also mean that you might not be able to ‘walk the stage’ at Graduation. Those in their grade 12 year will commit to no more than 8 unexcused absences, and their attendance will be reviewed regularly by the administration before the decision to permit the student to walk the stage is made. The bottom line is that good attendance is essential for success in school and in the workplace.

Should a student not live up to the above expectations the following will take place:
- student teacher conference
- student, parent, teacher conference
- meeting with guidance/administration and the creation of a Formal Attendance Contract
- failure to meet expectations after above process, the student may be withdrawn from courses and/or school
Leaving School Early
All students must sign out through the main office and must contact a parent/legal guardian (if under the age of 18) prior to leaving school during school hours.
Extended Leaves
Periodically parents may wish to take their son or daughter on an extended holiday, which includes school days. This practice is not encouraged by the administration or school board, therefore when parents make such requests, the student and parent are asked to complete an extended leave form which is available from the office. Extended leaves of absence during the final examination period are strongly discouraged. Under certain circumstances, when arrangements are made with the subject teacher prior to the day of the final examination, students may be allowed to write their final exam at an alternate time. This applies for non-diploma examinations only.
Extended leaves during final exams must be approved by administration. Leaves at this time may result in a grade of zero given for the final exam.
Part-Time Programs
Should a student be on a part-time program or less (2 or less periods) that occurs in either Blocks 1 and 2 or Blocks 3 and 4, are expected to leave the building when not in classes.
