Security

Safety within our Building

All visitors and volunteers to Jennie Elliott School are asked to enter the front doors and sign in. Please do not come in your child’s entry door as we need to account for all of the visitors in our building. Volunteers are asked to sign in at the office and to pick up a Volunteer name tag to be worn while in the school. Please leave your name tag at the school for future use.

*NEW* All visitors to the school, as well as late students, will be required to buzz in at the front office. This buzzer/ intercom is located to the right of door on the brick wall outside. You will be asked to identify yourself and then we will unlock the door for you. Thank you for your understanding and your support with the safety and security of our children and staff.

End of Day

We respectfully request that you meet your child at a designated meeting spot and not wait outside their homeroom as the hallways are very congested with children at the end of the day. Arriving early for pick up and being in the hallways can be distracting for the students who are completing their learning day. The best place to wait is outside. We encourage all of our children to be independent in their routines and they should learn to meet parents in these locations.

After school all outside doors will remain locked. If students are waiting for a ride and a parent is delayed, they are advised to report to the main office for assistance. If you are picking your child up from Before & After School Care, please use the Before & After School Care buzzer located by the front door so the door can be opened for you.

Supervision

Outdoor

For safety reasons, please ensure your child does not arrive at school prior to 8:50 AM. At this time, students are able to enter the school and make their way to their classroom as part of our soft entry procedure. If you require childcare prior to 8:50 AM, please call the privately run Before and After School program at 403-383-7999.

The lunchroom staff provides supervision continuously over the lunch hour for those students in our lunchroom program.

After-School

There is no supervision available on the schoolyard after school when students are dismissed. We ask that students go home immediately upon dismissal and return to the schoolyard only with parental supervision and/or permission. The school is not responsible for the actions of children in the playground after dismissal time.

If you will be picking your child up from school, please contact the office so that we can relay this message on to your child. Students are to report to the office to wait for their parent/guardian and the parent/guardian will sign them out. We ask that you also explain this procedure to your child.

Demographic Report

At the beginning of the school year, parents will be asked to complete a Demographic Report for each child they have attending Jennie Elliott School. This information is critical in dealing with emergencies or illnesses. If there are any changes in telephone numbers, addresses, emergency contacts, etc. through the year, please forward this information to the school office immediately.

If there are child custody issues or restrictions in place, please ensure that the office is made aware of them. We ask that supporting documentation be presented to the office for verification. This information is treated in a very confidential and professional manner.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
