Volunteer with Us

We welcome volunteers in the classroom, on field trips and with certain tasks at school or at home. Certain activities or field trips would not be possible without the active participation of our volunteers. Contact us about ways you can volunteer with our school.

Visit the CBE website for more information on volunteering, including the required registration and Police Information Check. (Please note, guest speakers or visitors to the school, and parents/guardians assisting their own child only are not considered to be volunteers and do not require a police information check.)

Volunteering for an Off-Site Activity

If you want to volunteer for an off-site activity, please keep in mind:

  • Volunteers are subject to the requirements of CBE Administrative Regulation 5003 – Volunteers, which includes an application and a police security screening check
  • Volunteers are covered by the CBE’s liability insurance policy while performing their assigned duties
  • Volunteers are covered by WCB while performing their duties
  • Volunteers receive direction from and are accountable to the teacher-in-charge

Volunteering at Jennie Elliott School

Parent volunteerism enriches our learning community and your child’s learning experiences. Volunteers are welcome for classroom support, material preparation, home reading organization, special events, field trips, and help in the library or for specific office support functions, fundraising, school beautification, organizing celebrations or special events, running noon hour clubs, and as classroom or school speakers.

We also offer volunteers the opportunity to work as trained volunteers with Calgary Reads. These volunteers work with our grade one and two students to provide individualized reading instruction, twice a week for approximately ten to twelve weeks. Volunteer training is provided every fall, contact the school for more information.

In order to co-ordinate the roles of volunteers, a volunteer form will be sent home with fall registration information. The School Council Volunteer Coordinator works with these lists to ensure that volunteers are matched to their participation interests.

Volunteer Security Clearance Process

Prospective volunteers must first register as a volunteer at the school office. School administrators will verify your identity and register you in our volunteer database. You will then be provided with a letter enabling you to obtain a police information check from the Calgary Police Service (CPS).

The CPS has an online system, electronic Police Information Check (ePIC), which you will use to obtain your police check after you receive your CBE volunteer letter. If you are unable to complete the process online, you may visit a police information check location instead.

Your security clearance is valid for five years and the $15 cost is covered by the CBE.

Please note, prospective volunteers must reside in Canada for a full year before registering. Police clearances from countries other than Canada are not accepted.

Volunteer Registration

You must also complete the annual CBE volunteer registration form. By completing the form, you agree to abide by the conditions that protect the safety, confidentiality and working environment of our schools. You also make a signed declaration with regard to criminal charges.
