English Language Learners (ELL)

ELL Champion: Ms. Tatiana Ryall, taryall@cbe.ab.ca

Welcome to JCS!

If you are new to Calgary and speak a language other than English at home, you are required to contact the Welcome Centre at 403-777-7373 to make an appointment for your language test. The assessment of listening, speaking, reading and writing helps us decide if your child would benefit from English language instruction and support.

Interpreters and Settlement Workers are available at the Welcome Centre to help families new to living in Calgary.

Our Vision at JCS for English Language Learners is to focus on English language development, create a strong foundation for learning and set students up for success.

Our Objective is to strategically schedule students into appropriate classes in order to develop the language skills necessary for mainstream classes. This is done through teacher recommendations, results from the Welcome Center testing or completing assessments at JCS.

Our supports include offering beginner ELL courses (Levels 1, 2, 3), Canadian Studies 15/25, providing a quiet space (room 3209) and extended time for writing tests and quizzes.

We look forward to seeing you in the classroom!
