Assessment & Reporting

Report Cards

Report cards are made available in MyCBE / PowerSchool twice per year—in February and June. All families are encouraged to signup for MyCBE / PowerSchool access at the beginning of the school year, as this platform allows parents and guardians to get a ‘live view’ of their child’s class mark and attendance. Mid-term report marks and comments are electronic and available in MyCBE / PowerSchool. If you would like a printed mid-term report card, please contact the Main Office. Following each mid-term report, Assistant Principals meet with students who are struggling in two or more courses to address the factors contributing to the student’s lack of success. Parents and guardians are encouraged to contact their student’s teachers—Parents as Partners and Parent-Student-Teacher conferences are excellent opportunities to participate in your student’s learning journey.

Check our calendar page for exact dates when report cards are issued.

No Zero Policy

It is our philosophy at John G. Diefenbaker High School that all students are responsible for the completion of all assessments. We believe failure is not an option and will intervene to ensure that student learning is not compromised. Such a position provides the opportunity for students to be more responsible than if they are able to opt out of doing the work by “taking a zero”. We encourage our parents and teachers are able to work together to support students as they learn to be accountable – by doing the work.

Teachers must have a credible body of student work, in a timely manner, in order to make an informed professional assessment of the student’s level of achievement. With MyCBE / PowerSchool, there are a range of icons that will inform the status of assignments such as: late; missing; incomplete; collected or absent. None of these flags will directly impact a student’s mark, rather it shows which assignments and outcomes have not been addressed and why.

Assessment and Reporting at the CBE

We know it is important for parents/guardians to understand how their children are doing in school. Research shows that students are more successful with active parent/guardian involvement.

The report card is one component in communicating student learning. In addition to the report card, schools communicate with parents/guardians about student progress on an ongoing basis in a variety of ways.

Assessment happens every day, in every classroom, throughout the school year. Assessing a student’s progress is one of the most important ways we support the continued learning of our students.

We have developed some resources related to assessment and report cards, and to help you learn more about your child's learning. As more resources are developed, you will find them here.

Digital report cards are available through MyCBE. For help with accessing student assessment and reporting information, please refer to the information in the MyCBE Technical Support for Students & Parents website.
