Course Content
Drama education is concerned with acquiring knowledge of self and others through participation in and reflection on dramatic experience; with developing competency in communication skills through participation in and exploration of various dramatic disciplines; and with the development of an appreciation for drama and theatre as a process and art form.
The five disciplines of the Junior High Drama Program are:
- Movement
- Speech
- Improvisation/Acting
- Technical Theatre
- Theatre Studies
Prior to study in any of these disciplines however, focus must be given to orientation. Orientation is the foundation of the program. Orientation establishes necessary controls, routines, climate building, and trust.
Grade 8
Drama at John Ware is a hands on, action-packed, group oriented study of ensemble skills, physical, and vocal communication and performance skills, disguised as fun. All three-grade levels begin with an orientation unit, where class expectations are established, and a positive atmosphere of mutual respect and creative security is established. Only then can we begin to explore specific units in any degree of depth. Therefore, only a general, tentative course outline is available at this point. The more co-operative, positive and hardworking a group is, the more in depth and advanced their Drama program can become.
