Sept. 18 Update

Dear Families,
We hope that you had the chance to participate in your child’s "Virtual Meet the Teacher" presentation this week. Communication between school and home is very important and we appreciate that you take the time in your busy schedule for events like these. If you were not able to make it, please contact your child’s teacher to receive their Power Point presentation.

We would like you to join us in welcoming Madame Tamara Fawcett, who is our new permanent gr. 1 teacher. We are very happy that she joined our team.  We were sad to say goodbye to Madame Tetyana who was temporarily in that position.  She did a great job with these students and helped them transition to their new teacher.  We wish all the best to Madame Tetyana.

Students know their routine well now and continue to be consistent with hand-washing, physical distancing and wearing their mask. Thank you for supporting them with reminders as well.

Please note that we no longer hand out cutlery and extra snacks to students due to Covid19. Please ensure that your child has cutlery in their lunch kit when needed. It's also a good idea to pack that extra snack as children go through growth spurts at different times.

Lost and Found items have always accumulated at King George School. In order to help with lost items, we urge parents to label each item of clothing and lunch kits with your child's name, especially hats, hoodies, toques, mittens, jackets, etc. If the item is labelled, we can easily return the item back to the child. Lost and Found will be collected by our Lead Lunchroom Supervisor, Mme Miho, and returned to students, as long as the item is labelled with the child's name. Items not labelled will be kept in a bag. Unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity. Donations are sent in December, March, and June. If your child loses a piece of clothing, please have your child contact Mme Miho at school, or their classroom teacher. We will do our best to see if we can find it and give it back to your child. However, we cannot offer guarantee on these.  We are not allowed to keep a large amount of clothing in the school due to Covid19. Thank you for your understanding and reminding your child to take care of their belongings.

We received a $600.00 donation from one of our families! We are so grateful for their kind gesture and we want to thank them again for the generous gift.  We will spend this money on technology for our students.

The Terry Fox Run Week will be held from Sep 28 - Oct 2. Students will be running with their cohort class during their Phys-Ed block. The Terry Fox Run is a charity event to commemorate Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope, and to raise money for cancer research. Our goal this year is to raise $1200, and we are hoping each student can bring a "Toonie for Terry" for this important cause. Students will be engaging in conversations about the Terry Fox Run next week. Thank you.

1.     How to support your child’s learning at home:  Be positive about learning. By asking your child about their day and what they are learning, you can show them that learning is important, and that you want to support them.  Being a role model for reading is also important.  You can take your child to one of the many Calgary Public Library locations and borrow some for you too!  Having regular conversations with our children is very important. This helps us to connect with them and support their vocabulary development, their knowledge of the world and so much more.  Enjoy reading to them before they go to bed. I remember doing this every night with my own children and they both developed into keen readers!
2.    Have a great week!
