Assessment

We will have many conversations about assessment at LBP – with you, your parents, and your teachers. These conversations will be important so that we broaden our understanding of assessment as essential for learning, growth, and future goals not just marks; assessment happens daily during class time and throughout the year as well as during report card time.

Outcomes – statements from the programs of study that describe what you are expected to know and be able to do in a subject.

Competencies – interrelated attitudes/skills/knowledge that are demonstrated through the outcomes, present in the front part of the programs of study and essential for exemplary success in the discipline in school and in the world – collaboration, problem solving, global understanding are examples.

You can expect to complete a variety of tasks to show what you know, including artifacts, assignments, exams, presentations, projects, quizzes, self-assessments. Teachers will also assess through conversations about and observations of your learning. Some tasks will be part of ongoing, formative feedback to determine next steps for learning. Some tasks will be summative and compare your achievement against what is required. The teacher will give you feedback. On report cards you will see both percentages (as required by Alberta Education) and comments.

Students, teachers and parents should visit the teachers’ learning management systems regularly – for example, D2L or MyCBE / PowerSchool.

There will be learning management system tutorials at our conferences and “Meet the Staff” evenings. You can also contact the classroom teacher or the school office for assistance.

Please note that attention to due dates is a competency that can help you achieve exemplary achievement. While teachers will communicate a “window of opportunity” for task completion, incomplete tasks will impact your success. Success Time and other opportunities arranged in discussion with your teachers will help you stay current and on track.

Assessment and Reporting at the CBE

We know it is important for parents/guardians to understand how their children are doing in school. Research shows that students are more successful with active parent/guardian involvement.

The report card is one component in communicating student learning. In addition to the report card, schools communicate with parents/guardians about student progress on an ongoing basis in a variety of ways.

Assessment happens every day, in every classroom, throughout the school year. Assessing a student’s progress is one of the most important ways we support the continued learning of our students.

We have developed some resources related to assessment and report cards, and to help you learn more about your child's learning. As more resources are developed, you will find them here.

Digital report cards are available through MyCBE. For help with accessing student assessment and reporting information, please refer to the information in the MyCBE Technical Support for Students & Parents website.

Visit the CBE website for more information on Assessment & Reporting at the CBE.
