Skills Canada
Skills Competitions give high school students a great opportunity to challenge themselves and show off their skills.
Students have the opportunity to compete in over 40 trade and technology categories ranging from baking, fashion, welding, animation and much more. Check out all the Skills Alberta Events .
There are a few reasons to take on a skills challenge:
- to increase your skills
- to have fun doing something you love to do
- to show off your skills
- to learn about the world outside of high school
It can start in High School with a Regional Skills Competition and can take you across the globe to a World Skills Competition!

- The Lord Beaverbrook Skills Coordinators are working with a committee of teachers from across the Calgary Board of Education to plan the trip details for almost 100 CBE students to the Provincial Skills Competition. We will travel together and stay at the the same location in Edmonton. You can click on the image to the right to see the tentative trip itinerary and anticipated costs for the Provincial Competition.
- Students can also choose to travel on their own or with their families, without school supervision, and accept the responsibility for all costs of the trip themselves.
National Competition – Team Alberta
Happens in early June.
The provincial Gold medal winners are given the opportunity to be a part of Team Alberta at the Skills Canada National Competition. If the Gold medalist is not able to attend, the next top ranking individuals will be asked to participate.
Travel and Accomodations are arranged by Skills Alberta but neither Skills Alberta nor the Calgary Board of Education have funds available to cover the costs of competing at Nationals. Families need to plan ahead in the event that their child earns a spot on Team Alberta and budget approximately $500 to cover the costs of the competition.
WorldSkills International Competition
Happens every two years.
Members of Team Canada may qualify during the National Competion. They will train for the next WorldSkills Competition.
