Medical Studies (Introductory)

This exploratory course gives students an overview of the health care system. Students learn basic medical terminology, introductory anatomy and physiology of the body, basic principles of infection and immunity and specific anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the integumentary, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular systems. Students will have the opportunity to conduct a variety of hands on laboratory experiences to develop an understanding of the human body and medical professions.

Medical Studies (Intermediate)

Medical Studies for grade 11 delves further into the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the nervous, and reproductive systems.

Students learn about pre-natal care, labour, delivery and post-natal care. Students explore the components of mental well-being including adaptive coping techniques; causes, signs/symptoms, and treatment of common psychological and psychiatric conditions. Students also investigate the concept of public health promotion and prevention techniques by planning and promoting a school wide health and wellness project.

Medical Studies (Advanced)

In Medical Studies for grade 12, students learn about medical technology used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and medical conditions. Hands on learning opportunities in biomedical engineering and surgical techniques include the creation of a prosthetic leg and the process of creating incisions and suturing. Students will explore a variety of treatment approaches including traditional and integrative health therapies. They are given the opportunity to study a chronic or acute medical condition of their choosing, learning the process of conducting medical research. Students complete training in Standard First Aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) for adults, children and infants at a health care provider level of certification.
