Specific Science Courses

Science 10

This academic course is a pre-requisite for all academic science streams. This is a rigorous course, giving a basic understanding of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Climate. Students have the opportunity to participate in various labs and science activities. Students need to be organized and self-motivated as this course moves at fairly quick pace. A strong background in math is recommended more specifically students should be enrolled in Math 10C to find success in this course.

  • Prerequisite course is Science 9 or Recommended Mark in Science 14: 80% or Science 24: 70%.

Science 10 – Advanced Placement®

Students in AP courses have a keen interest in science, a commitment to academic excellence, and have the support of their parents. Advance Placement students will cover the same curriculum as students in the regular counterpart programs, however, it will be faster and more detailed. Courses will have additional content to insure all content is covered before the Advanced Placement exam is taken during May of the 30-level course. Students will have the opportunity to participate in additional labs and will advance to university level work while still in high school. Students who participate in this program love science and are highly motivated, self-directed learners.

  • Prerequisite course is Science 9.

Science 10 Arts-Centered Learning

Science 10 ACL is an academic course which covers the same curriculum as Science 10. Students are asked to explore scientific concepts through the arts which adds a layer of complexity to their learning. Emphasis is placed on learning processes that foster inquiry, exploration, expression and reflection through artistic media.

  • Prerequisite course is Science 9.

Science 14

This course sequence is designed for students who have historically found science difficult. The program focuses on basic skills and offers students a more hands-on, practical approach to science. Each course is comprised of four units with each unit investigating a practical approach to one of the main fields of science (chemistry, physics, biology, and either technology or ecology). This course sequence fulfills the science component for a High School Diploma.

  • Prerequisite course is Science 9.

Science 10-4 / 20-4 (Knowledge and Employability)

This course is designed for students who have difficulty with Science, have applied for or have received a KAE recommendation for high school. Success in Science 10-4 and 20-4 will lead to the completion of the science requirements for a High School Certificate of Achievement. This sequence of courses is about developing basic science literacy. Students will develop skills and attitudes in science needed to be a productive member of society.

  • Students who enroll in the KAE Science sequence have been identified by their teachers/ parents/ guidance counsellors as needing continued support and work on their foundational science skills.
  • This programming sequence does not qualify a student to receive an Alberta High School Diploma, but rather the Alberta Certificate of High School Achievement.

Science 24

This course sequence is designed for students who have historically found science difficult. The program focuses on basic skills and offers students a more hands-on, practical approach to science. Each course is comprised of four units with each unit investigating a practical approach to one of the main fields of science (chemistry, physics, biology, and either technology or ecology). This course sequence fulfills the science component for a High School Diploma.

  • Students must maintain a passing grade to move to the next course in this Science sequence.

Science 20, 30

This academic sequence is intended for students considering post-secondary or trade-related career options. It is recommended for students wanting to attend university majoring in non-science academic fields. These courses offer a less rigorous, more general background of biology, chemistry and physics. Science 30 is widely accepted by post-secondary institutions for entrance. It is important to check with individual institutions and faculties for required science courses.

  • Students must maintain a passing grade to move to the next course in this science sequence.

Biology – Academic, Arts-Centered Learning and Advanced Placement® Programming

Biology is a rigorous series of classes that focuses on understanding how energy is harnessed on earth through plants and moved through the various living systems. Biology 20 deals with the initial capturing of the sun’s energy in the biosphere, harnessing the energy by plants through photosynthesis, the breakdown of the converted energy through cellular respiration and tracked through human physiology using the systems approach – specifically: the digestive system, circulatory system, respiratory system, muscle system and finally the excretory system.

Biology 30 makes a comprehensive overview of physiology, development, and change in the humans integrating a system, and regulatory approach. An in depth study of cellular reproduction, genetics, reproduction and development, the nervous and endocrine systems, and population change will be made.

  • It is recommended that students who enroll in Biology have received a mark of at least 65% in the previous course to enter into the next course in the sequence.
  • Students are recommended to have achieved at least 75% in Science 10 AP or 80% in Science 10 to take Biology AP.

Chemistry – Academic, and Advanced Placement® Programming

Chemistry is a rigorous academic course that investigates matter as related to solids, liquids and gases as they react. Quantitative relationships are analyzed leading the student in the understanding of the complex systems evidenced in the world around them. Both a theoretical and analytical approach will be used by students as they glean meaning from scientific exploration and practical applications.

It is recommended that students who enroll in Chemistry have received a mark of at least 65% in the previous course to enter into the next course in the sequence. A strong background in math is recommended – specifically students should have courses in the (-1) math to find success in this sequence.

  • Students are recommended to have achieved at least 75% in Science 10 AP or 80% in Science 10 to take Chemistry AP. 
  • It is recommended that students who enroll in Chemistry have received a mark of at least 65% in the previous course to enter into the next course in the sequence.

Physics – Academic, and Advanced Placement® Programming

Physics is the study of matter and energy and their interactions. Through the study of physics, learners are given an opportunity to explore and understand the natural world and to become aware of the profound influence of physics in their lives. Learning is facilitated by relating the study of physics to what the learners already know, deem personally useful and consider relevant. Learning proceeds best when it originates from a base of concrete experiences presenting an authentic view of science in the context of physics. In Physics 20–30, students learn physics in relevant contexts and engage in meaningful activities. This facilitates the transfer of knowledge to new contexts

  • Students are recommended to have achieved at least 75% in Science 10 AP or 80% in Science 10 to take Physics AP.
  • It is recommended that students who enroll in Physics 30 have received a mark of at least 65% in the previous course to enter into the next course in the sequence.
