Diploma Exams

Alberta Education directs the Grade 12 Diploma Examinations Program. You may have questions regarding this program for the remainder of the 2021- 22 school year, given that January Diploma Examinations were cancelled by the Minister of Education.

As of March 3, 2022, the Alberta Education Diploma exams webpage states:

  • Diploma exams are expected to be administered for the rest of the school year (April, June and August 2022). The situation will continue to be monitored and the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health will inform final decisions.

  • Due to learning disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the weighting of diploma exams will be temporarily reduced to 10% for the 2021/22 school year only.

For more information on each of these bullets, please refer to this webpage.

Provincial tests are part of a balanced, broad-based program of student assessment. The results provide some of the information that guides our educators as they set targets for student achievement and track the results of school improvement initiatives. Visit the CBE website for more information on our students’ provincial testing.

For the 2021-22 school year only, diploma exams will comprise 10 per cent of a student's overall mark in the course. Diploma exams are mandatory and will be offered for every diploma exam course listed below in November, January, April, June and August:

  • English Language Arts 30-1

Exemptions from Final Exams

The information presented below is consistent with Alberta Education policy.

Final Examination exemptions may be considered for the following reasons:

  • Acute medical illness
  • Bereavement
  • Severe inclement weather preventing access to the school
  • Subpoena to attend court
  • School or community emergency or crisis
  • Surgery
  • Other unavoidable circumstances - case by case determination

Consistent with Alberta Education policy for diploma examinations, final examination exemptions will not be granted for students who are on vacation, attending a wedding or family event, or on an organized tour. In case of an exemption request, an official request for exemption from writing final examinations form is to be completed by the student and parent or guardian and returned as soon as possible to the main office in addition to related documentation.

This includes physician confirmation of acute medical condition. Authorization for exemptions will be made by the assistant principal responsible for examinations for non-diploma exams and submitted to Alberta Education for authorization in the case of diploma exams. Teachers will not make individual arrangements with students and parents to write final exams. In cases where non-diploma exam exemptions are awarded, the class mark will comprise 100% of the grade.
