Diploma Exams

Alberta Education informed school boards on October 13, that October/November 2020 Diploma Exams are optional for some students, and the decision to write will be made by students and their parents.  Diploma Exams scheduled for January, April or June continue to be mandatory at this time.

The exemption to write applies only to students currently taking the Diploma course and who will receive a school-awarded mark for the first quarter (September - November) courses.  Those students who tool a Diploma course before the 2020-21 school year who have registered to write one or more exams in October/November must still write the exam.  However, they may choose to defer the exam writing to January, April or June (message from Chief Superintendent of Schools on October 14, 2020).

Alberta Education has clarified that any student who finished a diploma course and received a school-awarded mark after the August writing of diplomas and before the November writing, is also exempt from writing the November exams.

Provincial tests are part of a balanced, broad-based program of student assessment. The results provide some of the information that guides our educators as they set targets for student achievement and track the results of school improvement initiatives. Visit the CBE website for more information on our students’ provincial testing.

Students taking specific Grade 12 core subjects write provincial Diploma Examinations at the completion of the course which count for 30% of the student’s final mark. These courses in the CBE are:

  • English Language Arts 30-1
  • English Language Arts 30-2
  • French Language Arts 30-1

Exemptions from Final Exams

The information presented below is consistent with Alberta Education policy.

Final Examination exemptions may be considered for the following reasons:

  • Acute medical illness
  • Bereavement
  • Severe inclement weather preventing access to the school
  • Subpoena to attend court
  • School or community emergency or crisis
  • Surgery
  • Other unavoidable circumstances - case by case determination

Consistent with Alberta Education policy for diploma examinations, final examination exemptions will not be granted for students who are on vacation, attending a wedding or family event, or on an organized tour. In case of an exemption request, an official request for exemption from writing final examinations form is to be completed by the student and parent or guardian and returned as soon as possible to the main office in addition to related documentation.

This includes physician confirmation of acute medical condition. Authorization for exemptions will be made by the assistant principal responsible for examinations for non-diploma exams and submitted to Alberta Education for authorization in the case of diploma exams. Teachers will not make individual arrangements with students and parents to write final exams. In cases where non-diploma exam exemptions are awarded, the class mark will comprise 100% of the grade.
