Regular Program at the CBE

Even though most of our schools offer a regular program, no two are quite the same. All schools teach according to Alberta Education’s mandated curriculum, however a school’s focus, optional courses and school activities are as unique as every school.

Program, Focus & Approach

Louise Dean School is a specialized Grade 9 – 12 education program for pregnant and parenting teens. The school is a compassionate and caring community, which is anchored by the strong belief that education is the key to moving the lives of our students and their children forward. Our goal is to ensure that every young parent that we work with has comprehensive supports, as they move into family and community leadership.

The education program allows students to work towards a high school diploma or certificate, while affording them flexible scheduling for maternity leaves, counselling or lifestyle challenges. Students who are too old to complete their Grade 12 studies at the school are also welcome to join us to complete core courses. Students may enter the school while they are pregnant or after the birth of their child. Some students transfer directly from their home school, while other students have been out of school for a length of time. Regardless of a student’s academic background, Louise Dean School works to support learning and lifestyle needs. This is a full-time education program with direct instruction.

Learning support is highly personalized to meet academic and emotional needs. The school follows the traditional calendar. Intake is continuous to ensure that all students have immediate access to supports.

We have a formal partnership with Kindred and Alberta Health Services which guarantees that all students access ‘wrap-around’ supports. These supports include onsite subsidized childcare for infants, counselling, prenatal and parenting classes, financial assistance and career counselling. Moving into post-secondary programs is highly encouraged and supported.

Assistance from community and individual supporters allows us to offer a free breakfast program, a subsidized lunch program, support in preparing for the arrival of a baby and scholarships for post-secondary education. The Centre partnership with the Alberta government, also allows the school to offer a Foundational Learner Assistance Program that provides personal financial assistance and childcare funding that may be required to move towards high school completion.

Balancing the demands of full time school and parenting is a challenge; however students learn to work together to move their lives forward. The school is a very safe environment where students are supported to set high personal and family goals. If a student is looking to return to school or is interested in transferring from another school program, please contact the office for additional information or a tour.

Classes Unique to Louise Dean School

The school supports our students by offering specialized Life Skill, Prenatal and Parenting classes. All of these courses are high school credit based, but they recognize the unique learning needs of our students. Students have the opportunity to freely and confidentially discuss issues related to pregnancy and the challenges that many young parents face. The classes are highly informative and personalized to support all of our students.

Teachers, nurses and social workers collaborate in teaching these classes.

Course Offerings

The school offers a full range of courses that lead to a High School Diploma or High School Certificate. Administration will work with the student to ensure the correct courses to obtain the students’ goals are met. The school also offers specialized 3 and 5 credit courses that support pregnancy and parenting. In the event that a student has not been successful in completing a course, administration and teachers will try to recover the course with the student. Instead of redoing the entire course, the student may be required to complete areas of a course where the student was not successful.
