Hello Louis Riel Families,

Although there was a lot of smoke that found its way to Calgary, the fire was far enough to the north that we were fortunately and safely out of reach. We may have started the week with sunny skies but they were quickly covered with a thick layer of smoke. The rapid drop in air quality led schools to determine whether outdoor activities or field trips could be managed safely and what could not. We all learned a lot about the air quality index and how to interpret data shared by Environment Canada in relation to our immediate airspace and air quality. Our young scientists quickly developed their understanding of local and provincial weather conditions and how they influence the direction and persistence of wildfire smoke in the atmosphere. We halted outdoor activities and had a few days of indoor recess/lunch to get through the worst of it all. Some field experiences had to be cancelled or rescheduled as our basketball games were but our Grade 6s were still able to enjoy their overnight trip to the Royal Tyrell Museum. We even able to successfully complete our first Provincial Achievement Tests for Grade 6 and 9 students in ELA this week. Our second pancake snack break was held this week thanks to our Leadership students. This week proved that the rapid pace of learning continues despite the changing weather and air quality!

Garden club is up and running and our Spring Running club is ready to do the same as long as the air quality remains safe.
Students will be lending their voice to help keep Louis Riel a safe and caring place to learn by taking our student well-being survey.
The bucketball tournament should return next week.
We’re planning for our 2023-24 option classes for our grades 5-9 students by assessing their interests in another survey form.
Our Leadership students are planning more fun activities for the entire school so standby!
Teachers will get to take to the basketball courts to showcase fair(ish) play and our old(er) age against the boys and girls teams following playoffs.

We have so many exciting learning opportunities and community building events to look forward to in the coming months that you’ll need to read the “Upcoming Dates” section closely each week.

Basketball Season: Playoffs Rescheduled/Updated

Jr and Sr Girls will play Tuesday ; Jr and Sr Boys on Wednesday. Winners will advance to Thursday. With playoffs beginning we will continue to remind our students and families about the divisional expectations of all spectators.

For games hosted at LRS, our student spectators are welcome to attend the FIRST game of the evening only. Teachers will help our un-parented students find the exits after the first game.
No un-parented spectators from other schools will be permitted at LRS hosted games.
No un-parented LRS students are to attend games hosted at other schools.
Parents attending away games with their own child are asked to not transport and manage more students than you have seatbelts in your vehicle. This is to prevent parents from being “responsible” for students they did not bring with them to an Away game or that they do not know.

Open House May 25

We are hosting our spring open house at the end of this month. We’re welcoming new kindergarten families, new student families, and existing student families to an evening of socializing with other families, meeting our staff, touring the school, and seeing examples and demonstrations of student work in person. We will have “Welcome to Louis” orientation presentations for new families and will also have leadership students helping existing families find their way around the school. Families will have an opportunity to visit instructional spaces following scheduled presentations in our gyms.

New to Louis Families meet in South Gym at 5 pm
Doors open to existing families from 5:30 pm to 7 pm

Volunteers

Louis Riel, as a science school, aims to provide our students with many field experiences and trips as enhancements to their learning experience throughout the year. When your student has a field experience or trip coming up please consider taking the time to share the experience with them as a parent or guardian volunteer. You’ll get a glimpse into the life of your student at Louis Riel, you’ll undoubtedly learn something new, and you’ll have a lot more to discuss with them at the dinner table on the nights to follow.

There are only a couple of months left to join us by supporting a field experience or trip at Louis Riel as a volunteer this year!
