Principal's Message

Weekly Message - September 29, 2022

Dear Parents / Guardians,

It is always such a beautiful place in Varsity when the leaves begin to change as we move into fall. We are so lucky to have such mature trees and beautiful greenspaces in our local environment to enjoy on a daily basis. I have seen many classes over the past few weeks making their way outdoors to learn from the land, recognize its impact on their lives and better understand their impact on the land. Children have engaged in experiences with the land in many ways from running in the Terry Fox Run, enjoying lessons during Daily Physical Activity, sketching the natural environment while observing changes of the seasons, and/or by taking a close examination of the living plants within Marion's Meadow.

Orange Shirt Day

Many students wore their orange shirts, clothing and accessories today in recognition of the Sept. 30th National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We encourage you to take a moment to speak to your child about their understanding with respect to this day and their in-class learning. You will have noticed that this week our teachers and parent volunteers assembled our Every Child Matters tile display along the Varsity Drive fence near Marion's Meadow. These tiles were created by last year's students and will remain on this fence as a reminder of our learning and growth as a school, community and country.

International Walk to School Week: October 3-6, 2022

Did you know that Canada held its first national Walk a Child to School Day in 1998 with participants from five provinces? Today, schools from all thirteen provinces and territories join millions of students worldwide as they walk to school during the first week of October.  This year, International Walk to School week is October 3-6, 2022. International Walk to School Day is Wednesday, October 5, 2022. We encourage all students and families to find creative ways to get active and if possible walk to school!

Jacket Racket Donations

One of our goals at Marion Carson school is to build positive citizens of today and tomorrow that support people within our school community, within Calgary and globally. One of the initiatives that supports people closer to home occurs by supporting donations to the Jacket Racket campaign. This initiative will run this year from October 3rd to 31st.
We will be accepting winter jackets, snow pants, hats/toques and mittens. We kindly ask that donations that are collected be clean and in good condition (new or used). These donations will then be dropped off by our school at the Jacket Racket donation centre on your behalf, to be distributed to schools where there is a need.
We understand that there often may be a need for these items within our own school community. Should you be in need of such items, we would ask that you email your child's teacher directly, or the school office at MarionCarson@cbe.ab.ca. before October 24th, 2022.

Terry Fox Update

Thank you to all families for their support with our Terry Fox campaign. When combining both the in-person and online totals, I am proud to share that we surpassed our goal of $1000 with a total of $1382.10. A great big thank you goes out to the students and staff who took the time to organize this event and visit classrooms to raise awareness.

A Message from School Council…
