Principal's Message

September 24, 2021

Wow it has been an amazing start to our school year as we look back at our first month, September. So much has happened to set routines and establish relationships with friends, staff members and families. It is important that our new families feel welcome in our learning community to ensure a fresh positive start at such a challenging time in a child’s life. Being the “new kid” in the class is always stressful. Besides academic learning, there is also the need to understand the routines, get to know other students and then try to fit in. It is important for these children to have a great start since academic success boosts not only one child, but it helps others to move along with them. Please welcome our new families and help them through these challenging days so we can become a stronger and more successful community. New families are also encouraged to reach out to other families in your new learning community.
Parent Teacher Conferences are such an important communication tool that helps our families connect with their child’s teacher, allows parents to share their initial thoughts, set goals and brainstorm strategies to enhance learning. We hope you had an opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher, so we can move forward into a positive school year. Please be sure to continue to connect with teachers as needed so we are aware of how we can support your children both at school and at home.
This coming week is an important time for Canada. As a school we are recognizing the accomplishments of Terry Fox in his bid to run across Canada. His resiliency and determination lives on, even for those who were not even born to see the news reports or track Terry’s progress as he continued day after day. As adults, it is important that we use heroes like Terry as role models for our children, so they too become more resilient and determined to succeed in their goals. Thank you for taking time this week to chat with your children about Terry Fox, a Canadian hero.
The following day, we as a school, we will recognize Residential Schools and their influence on Canadian Indigenous people through Orange Shirt Day. Students are asked to wear an orange shirt or something that is orange to show they understand that every child matters. There were many events in the past that we as Canadians have celebrated and that we should be proud of. Unfortunately, there are others that caste a dark shadow over our past and it is important that we recognize these events, to ensure they do not happen again. As many historians have said, we learn about history so we can improve the future. Teachers will have discussions about Residential Schools with students and the depth of the conversation will depend on the level of understanding our students have. We  encourage families to also have conversations at home so that together we ensure they know every child matters.

RT @SASCBE: Our Grade 3/4s had a hands on experience building birds houses after learning about the importance of birds in Calgary. Birds are often seen as spiritual messengers who bridge the natural and spirit world in Indigenous cultures. @DClovis https://t.co/7DoX3d45Ca

RT @CJMCBE: Our Grade 5 students explored Weaselhead Flats today. We learned so much about wetlands, plants, and animals. We studied aquatic invertebrates and saw so many different birds. Thank you to our guide and to our parent volunteers 😃 #WeAreCBE https://t.co/H26VYcj1EY

Today’s Board of Trustees public meeting starts at noon at the Ed Centre. Join us in-person or stream the meeting online https://t.co/nvCl1fNgoJ #yycbe https://t.co/LPMEBGH3XP

There’s still time to donate to the Loonies for Literacy campaign. For every dollar a school raises, a dollar will go to a school in need through the generosity of community sponsors & contributions. https://t.co/mzfcqpty5W #WeAreCBE
