A reminder that students go outside up until -20 degrees with the wind chill for recess, movement breaks and classroom learning and therefore should come to school with clothing to support a positive outdoor experience. We appreciate parents labelling all items (such as their mitts, toques, jackets, snow pants, boots and more) so that if they get misplaced at school, we can connect them with their rightful owner.

Weekly Message – January 20, 2023

What a wonderful week that we have had celebrating student learning. Our Celebration of Learning had a great turn out of families coming to explore student learning connected to our School Development Plan in the areas of Literacy, Numeracy and Well-being. I know students were very proud and excited to be able to share this learning with their families.

Our Lunar New Year Celebration was a great opportunity to celebrate Chinese culture and learning. The Chinese zodiac gives each year an animal sign. We learned about how Chinese New Year 2023 is a Year of the Rabbit, more specifically, Water Rabbit, starting from January 22nd. Students have been, and will continue participating in various Lunar New Year activities as organized by our Mandarin teachers and students to celebrate this occasion.

Please also welcome Mrs. Pimentel Coelho, who will begin her role as Administrative Assistant as of this upcoming Wednesday. As the year continues, certain fees become posted based on school registration, transportation, activities, and more. All fees are viewed and paid online by parents through their MyCBE account. These fees will be added to your child's account throughout the year as needed. At this time, we are asking all parents to visit their MyCBE account to ensure that fee payments are up to date, and then continue to visit their account for fee payment throughout the year when your child is involved in an activity with required payment. We appreciate your prompt payment of these fees. Some general information about fees is included below:

4.     Registration – Spread the Word

We had great interest at our Open House this past Thursday for both programs offered within our school. If you have a current student at our school, please note that you do not need to re-register your child each year, as they automatically go the next grade. If in a final year of the program (Grade 4 for Mandarin Bilingual and Grade 6 for Community English Programs) they will automatically be registered into their designated school for their program, unless we hear different from you as a parent/guardian about a move to another school. A message will be sent out later in the year about your plans for the upcoming school year, but if you know of a school move before this message, then please email our school at MarionCarson@cbe.ab.ca.

-       Grade 4 students in Mandarin Bilingual Program attend Colonel Irvine School for Grade 5.

-       Grade 6 students in Community English Program attend F.E. Osborne for Grade 7.

If you have a student who is a current member of Marion Carson School Mandarin Bilingual program and have another student that you are hoping to have begin attending the Mandarin Bilingual Program starting next year in Kindergarten or Grade 1, please be sure to express your interest using the related online registration pages. To be considered in the lottery for our Mandarin Bilingual Program, registration/expression of interest must be completed between January 16, 2023 and February 14, 2023 at 12pm noon.

*To be placed in the correct lottery priority placement, is important that if you have a sibling currently attending the Mandarin Bilingual program at Marion Carson School you take the time to enter the sibling information within the form, where requested, and click that you have an interest in Alternative Programs, which will lead to some additional branching questions related to our Mandarin Bilingual Program.

Registration for the K-6 Community English program also begins on January 16, 2023. Please spread the word about the great things happening at Marion Carson School.

For more information about registration, please visit the CBE Registration News Story on our website or click here for the Open House News Story which will have our Open House PowerPoint posted in the coming days.

Principal's Message - Dec. 16, 2022

Weekly Message – December 16, 2022

 1. Staffing Updates

It is the time of year, where there are often changes in staffing. We would like to announce the following Marion Carson School staffing updates.

-       Mrs. Cinnamon (Admin. Assistant): has been on a temporary position since near the start of the school year with finance at the Calgary Board of Education downtown centre. She has now accepted a full-time position at another Calgary Board of Education School effective Dec. 19, 2022 and therefore will not be returning to Marion Carson. We know that she will be missed here at Marion Carson School, and wish Mrs. Cinnamon all the best in the next chapter of her career.

-       Mrs. Ly (Assistant Principal): Mr. Ly had been planning since last year to take a Professional Improvement Fellowship starting January 9, 2023 through to the end of this school year to give her the time needed to complete her leadership studies at university. A true model of being a lifelong learner. We will miss her while she is away, but look forward to her return at the start of the 2023-24 school year. Enjoy your studies Mrs. Ly. While Mrs. Ly is away, we are excited to have Mrs. Rebecca Ghelfi join our Marion Carson School community as our Acting Assistant Principal. She will be joining us from Taradale School, and looks forward to the opportunity to support our students and staff.

-       Mrs. Roth (Library Assistant): has announced her retirement! Mrs. Roth's last day will be January 26th, 2023. We are excited for her as she moves into this next chapter of her life. Although she will be dearly missed here at Marion Carson, we want to express our best wishes moving forward and know that she will enjoy her retirement.

2. Registration - Spread the Word

Please spread the word with families and friends. Registration opens for the 2023-24 school year on Jan. 16, 2023 for both our K-6 Community English Program and Mandarin Bilingual Program. Families already attending Marion Carson school do not need to reapply.

To help interested parents/guardians prepare for registration time, we are sharing the Kindergarten Registration Guide. Our open house is January 12, 2023 at 6:30pm for families interested in attending Marion Carson School starting in September 2023 for either the Mandarin Bilingual or Community English Program.

CBE has also launched new and revised help pages for MyCBE and Sch oolEngage. The help pages can answer frequently asked questions and help parents/guardians navigate through the platforms more efficiently to support registration and yearly demographic form updates.

3.     MyBus Stop Update – Push Notifications

Southland Transportation has updated the MyBusStop app to include push notifications. When there is a posted delay on a bus route, families can now receive an alert directly to their mobile phone. To receive notifications families must have the app installed on their phone and have registered on the web site

If you child rides the bus, consider subscribing to their route using the code provided in MyCBE. They can then allow the app to provide them notifications on their route delays (see link for instructions).

You will be able to ask questions, hear from others with similar and different experiences and resources will be shared. Thank you for your time and consideration. You are a key partner in your child's education and student well-being is critically linked to student achievement.

3.     Reporting Absences or Early Pick-up

We ask that families write in their child's agenda or communication book when they know that their child will be an early pick-up on any given day. A reminder that when a child is absent, you are asked to phone in the absence to the school's absence line (403 777-6050, option 1) and email the teacher. This helps us to ensure student safety with efficiency on a daily basis. We appreciate your support in this matter.

These conferences are an opportunity to connect regarding your child's progress while at school and one of the ways that Marion Carson School builds a strong network of support for student learning. It is important for all families to book an appointment with their child's teacher.

Appointment are occurring online on Microsoft TEAMS:

*If you would like to request that your meeting be in-person, please book an appointment through conference manager as per normal. Once booked, you should then email your child's homeroom teacher requesting that their meeting be in person. Your child's teacher will then expect you in-person.

2.     Safety Over Convenience

I would like to once again thank all families who are paying close attention to student and adult safety during pick-up and drop-off times. While outdoors this week, I was able to connect with many parents who shared the same feelings and have noticed improvements in traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Please continue to be sure to use the crosswalks when crossing the road with or without your children and make note that there is no crosswalk directly coming from the path associated with our school playground or our main entry doors.

3.     AHS Notice of Respiratory Illness Outbreak at Marion Carson School

Please click here for a direct link to the letter on our school website.

Please also note that CBE is updating daily absence rates due to illness for schools at the following link on their website.
