Dear Parents / Guardians,

Seeing the students share their school and learning environment with joy and pride is one of the great perks of working within a school. I would like to sincerely thank all families for dedicating the time to furthering their child's learning experience by connecting with their teachers at conferences these past two days. If you did not have the opportunity or ability to attend a conference, we encourage you to email your child's teacher to look into making a connection either in-person, or by phone to schedule a mutually agreed upon time.

Terry Fox Run:

We are excited to share that as a school community our Terry Fox campaign raised $733.20. Thank you very much to all staff, students and families for your support. Well done!

Milk Program:

A message was sent home earlier this week for those families interested in signing up for the milk program. This program provides daily milk to students who sign-up. If interested, please return your child's form by September 25, 2023. Payment will then be made through your child's MyCBE account posted as a fee to add to your cart. For those signed up, the Milk Program, milk distribution will begin on October 10, 2023.

Mid-Autumn Festival September 25-27

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is one of the most important traditional festivals in Chinese culture. Chinese people have been celebrating this festival over 3,000 years. The festival is on Saturday September 29, 2023 with a full moon at night. At Marion Carson School, we will celebrate from September 25 to 27. We encourage you to ask your child(ren) about their learnings.

Some information about this festival shared by our Mandarin Bilingual Program teachers. On this day, Chinese people believe that the Moon is at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn. Chinese people celebrate it by gathering for dinners, worshiping the moon, lighting paper lanterns, eating mooncakes, etc. There are also a lot of legends about this festival, such as Chang E flying to the moon, Wu Gang and the cherry tree, and the Jade Rabbit.

The Chinese lunar calendar is the traditional calendar which has a history of approximately 3000 years. In the Chinese lunar calendar, days begin and end at midnight, and months begin on the day of the new moon. Years start on the second (or third) new moon after the winter solstice, and one year consists of 24 solar terms, which were created by farmers in ancient China to guide the agricultural affairs and farming activities based on the sun's position in the zodiac. The 24 solar terms reflect the changes in climate, natural phenomena, agricultural production, and other aspects of human life, including clothing, food, housing, and transportation. The 24 solar terms are still playing important roles and having greatly influenced people's basic needs in life nowadays. The length of a month is annotated as either big for months with 30 days or small for months with 29 days). This calendar governs holidays and festivals in China, such as the Chinese New Year, Lantern Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, etc.

National Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day

On Thursday, September 28, students at Marion Carson School are invited to wear Orange shirts or orange clothing in recognition of Orange Shirt Day, and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Orange shirt day is a day in which schools across Canada recognize, and teach about the residential schools that occurred between 1931 and 1996. The events of these schools are carefully discussed in an age and grade appropriate way.

Invite | National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day Event - Sept. 30

CBE students, staff and their families and friends are invited to join an event being hosted by the City of Calgary in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. The third annual ceremonial opening is taking place on Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fort Calgary (750 9th Ave SE). This year's gathering will include a smudge tent, in-person Indigenous speakers and performers, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The events will also include an intertribal dance demonstration featuring Indigenous students from the CBE and CCSD. Participants are encouraged to wear orange.

Following the YYC, CBE & CCSD event, all are invited to join the Pokaiks – The Children Commemorative Annual Walk and Gathering 2023. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. at City Hall (15-minute walk from Fort Calgary or 2-minute drive) and continue to Shaw Millenium Park (30-minute walk). The walk will be followed by drumming/dancing, Indigenous community speakers, artisan booths, and food sales.

-        School Council Meeting

Hug and Go Drop-Off Zone

A reminder to parents that we have a Hug and Go zone to assist families in dropping off their children in the mornings. This section is located directly after the bus zone when driving East on Varsity Drive. We ask that parents use this zone and avoid the staff parking lot or the bus zone in order to keep traffic flowing and ensure the safety of all families arriving at the school.

Terry Fox

It was wonderful to see so many parents join staff and students today at the Terry Fox event. It was great to see the smiles and joy as parents, staff and students all made our way through the course. I heard many people, especially students speaking about how great they felt after finishing their run.

We will announce how much money we raised next week once we've tallied the online and in-person donations. Thank you for supporting this cause.

We also hope that if you were able to attend the Coffee and Conversation post event in our school field that you enjoyed the opportunity to meet with other family members and made some good community connections. We would like to thank the Parent Association for organizing the post-event and Mrs. Collins, Mrs. Seto, and the classroom teachers for organizing the Terry Fox Run. In addition, we would like to thank the Terry Fox Foundation for their supplies and support, as well as the AMA Youth Run Club for providing the start/finish arch as well as student swag. Great job students on a great run/walk in support of cancer awareness and research.

Dear Parents / Guardians,

We have many exciting activities and events coming up at Marion Carson, some of which are listed below. This email contains many links regarding forms needing to be completed to start the school year. Please use this message to give you direct links to many of the forms whether they need to be completed online, or printed, signed, and returned to the school. Please see the message sent by School Messenger for active links to all documents below

Terry Fox Run / Cookies & Conversation – September 15, 2023

After being diagnosed with cancer at a young age, Terry Fox began a cross country run called the Marathon of Hope. In an effort to raise money for cancer awareness and research, Terry ran for a total of 143 days and a combined distance of 5,373 km! Terry Fox truly inspired others to never give up when times are difficult and demonstrated incredible determination and perseverance.

This year, we will be hosting our Terry Fox run on Friday, September 15th. We will be watching a short Terry Fox clip inside the school followed by a whole school run outside near the soccer fields from approximately 12:15 to 12:45pm to commemorate Terry Fox. Students should dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared to be active (runners, a water bottle, and a hat if necessary). Parents are invited to join this event for the outdoor run portion from 12:15 – 12:45 pm if willing and able. If planning to join us, please wait outside near the Start / Finish Arch provided by the AMA Youth Run Club where the event will occur.

We are asking students and families who are able to donate a toonie for Terry in support of our Terry Fox run. All proceeds will go to the Terry Fox Foundation in support of cancer research. Donations can be brought to school in person on September 15. If you'd rather, you can also make an online donation, by visiting our school fundraising page https://schools.terryfox.ca/31451 on your Internet browser and clicking donate.

Cookies & Conversation: At the end of the Terry Fox run, all parents are invited to attend a “Cookies and Conversation" in the school field where School Council has generously offered to provide students, staff, and their parents/guardians a few post-run treats and refreshments such as juice boxes and bag of mini cookies (Famous Amos brand) as a way to connect and mingle as a whole school community while sharing about the partnership between the school and the council. If you would not like your child to have these snacks, please email your child's teacher before the day of the run and your child's teacher will instead send them home with them in their backpack.

Everyone is welcome to join both the run and/or the Cookies & Conversation post-event. Please note that students will be expected to remain with their class following the run, and will re-enter the school towards the end of the day to be dismissed as per normal procedures at 1:20pm.

“I want to set an example that will never be forgotten. Dreams are made possible if you try."- Terry Fox

School Meet the Teacher Conferences – September 21 and 22, 2023

Our first meet the teacher school conference is scheduled for September 21 from 4:30 -7:30pm and September 22 from 8:30am – 12pm noon. Bookings are completed through your MyCBE account by clicking on the Book and Manage Meeting Times tab.

These conferences are specifically an opportunity for parents to share any important information with their child's homeroom teacher to support their learning at school, a chance to clarify classroom routines, while also allowing the teacher to share initial steps in each child's first few weeks of learning. All parents and their children should plan on attending these conferences.

Dear Parents / Guardians,

In this message…

-       Start of Year Forms

-       Marion Carson Digital Family Handbook 2023-24

-       Meeting Spot / Pick-Up

The first few days of school are now behind us, and we hope that if you or your child were feeling any initial nervousness due to the unknown that can come with the start of the school year, that it has now started to shift to a sense of understanding of what the year will like and some more comfort for all.

It was an absolute pleasure to see the excitement of students upon their return, and we look forward to many more joys throughout this year's learning journey. I was able to connect with all classrooms throughout the first two days as students began to settle into their new learning spaces and grades.

Surprise always occur at the start of the school year, even when we try to minimize their occurrences. This year, one big surprise was that our bike racks went missing the night before school started. I am happy to say that today they were returned and students and families who ride their bikes to school will have proper racks again on Tuesday morning.

Below, you will find a few pieces of information which will continue to support the student experience at Marion Carson School.

-       Start of Year Forms: next week your will receive a message about completing various forms such as our demographic forms, student health plans, and more. Please complete these as soon as they are received so that we have the most up to date information for your child in case of emergency.

-       Marion Carson Digital Family Handbook 2023-24: This year many grades transitioned into not having agendas in favour of a more digital approach of communication. The handbook is therefore not at the front of agendas, but instead has been attached to this message. Please see the attachment, and read through the handbook for important school information related to school process and procedures, and expectations. We ask that all parents and children sign the final commitment page and return it to their teacher (either digitally or as a paper copy).

-       Meeting Spot / Pick-Up: there is a lot of congestion at our doors at the end of the days. We ask that families, especially of student in grade 3 and up choose a meeting spot away from the doors where it will become routine to pick up and meet with your child (e.g. a spot on the field). *Reminder that parents must be at school to pick-up their children upon dismissal and children should not be left alone. We do not have after school supervision; therefore we remind parents that Monday to Thursday we end at 3:50pm, and Fridays at 1:20pm. Please plan on being at the school 5 minutes early at a minimum to meet your child. Please call the school should you have an emergency where you will be a few minutes late and we will have the students on these odd occasions wait at the office. Please speak to your children about knowing that if you are not outside to pick them up that they should come to the front west doors and ring the doorbell to be let back into the school, where we will contact their family on their behalf (teachers will also have this conversation with students).

Throughout the year, I will be sending messages most often arriving on a Friday which will include important information such as upcoming events, initiatives, school council meeting dates, and more. Thank you for taking the time to read these messages so that our students can have a most successful school filled with a sense of belonging, care and growth.

Should you have any questions, please be sure to review our school website or contact your school teacher for classroom matters, or for administrative supports, please call the school office at 403 777-6050 or email marioncarson@cbe.ab.ca

Sincerely,

Mr. Dustin Turner

Marion Carson School Start-Up

If you would like a translated version of this message, please click on the Google Translate tab at the top of this page.

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year at Marion Carson School! This is an exciting time of year, as you and your child embrace this next journey in their development.  I remember shedding a few tears when my daughters each began their Kindergarten years, and get that equally nervous and excited feeling for them as each new year begins. Know that your children are embarking on an exciting adventure that will undoubtedly be full of wonder, learning and care and that we are here to support and guide them through their journey.

If you are new to Marion Carson School, and no matter which program you and your family are a part of, welcome to our wonderful community where we come together as Marion Carson School. Know that we have worked very hard to create a caring environment focussed on belonging that provides for rich learning opportunities. If your child has not yet visited the school grounds, I would encourage you to do so with them in these final few days before entry, so that your child can see where they will be learning, play on the compound or on the play structure, etc.  Building some familiarity before entry can go a long way in building some level of comfort and excitement for your child.  If your child is entering Kindergarten, ensuring that they can put on/take off their shoes and coat will also set them up for early success. I believe that you will find our school community a caring, loving place to learn, whether in chatting with the teachers, meeting new parents, or watching your child develop new friendships.

A reminder that if your child is sick, they should be staying home until feeling well. Please ensure that you have contingency plans in place for times when your child may become ill as we would like to continue to keep everyone as healthy as possible and ready for learning at our school.

I can appreciate that families are very eager to hear who their child’s teacher will be for the coming school year. Know that, as with every year, changes occur over the summer due to a wide range of factors, and some adjustments to class lists continue to occur at this point of the year. I can share the following information though, which you may find helpful:

  • You can expect a message from your child’s teacher on the evening of Tuesday, August 29th.  This message will introduce you to the teacher, while also providing some information about routines, first day process, contact information, etc. If you do not receive a message that evening, please contact the school office the following day. When you do receive the message, we ask that you please respond to the email to confirm with the teacher that you are aware of the class placement.
  • For your information our staff list can be found on our website here.
  • Our back to school hours and schedules (including staggered entry for Kindergarten students) can be found here.
  • Our office is open to help as of Monday, August 28th, during our regular school hours of 9:10am to 3:50pm.
  • If you have moved or will be moving out of our catchment and live out of area, please let us know ASAP, to help us with class lists, and get your child transferred to their designated school. You can do so by responding to this email or by calling our school office at 403 777-6050.
  • Community Program registration is ongoing, if you have family or friends in our catchment looking to enrol at Marion Carson School please have them call our school office. ·       Arriving late in September? Moving Schools?

Way to go students at Marion Carson School on a successful year of learning. An extra congratulations goes out to our Grade 4 students from the Mandarin Bilingual program and our Grade 6 students in the Community English program who will each be moving on to their new schools for next year. We are so very proud of all the learning progress that all K-6 students accomplished this year. A few final reminders for parents as the year comes to a close…

June 29 (today) was the last day of school for students. School resumes August 31, 2023. You can see our back to school information here. Returning families can expect an introductory email from their new classroom teacher(s) on August 29 2023.

1.     Staffing Updates:

As the year comes to a close, we often say farewell to some of our staff, as they move to new locations, new roles, new employment, or retirement. We would like to wish all the best to Mrs. Ghelfi, Ms. Guo, Ms. Hymers, Mr. Kadri, Ms. Lowe-Synnott, Ms. McGown, Ms. McIlveen, Ms. Owens, Ms. Sbeiti, Mrs. Schofield, and Ms. Summer as they will not be returning to Marion Carson School to start of next school year.

It is also the time of year where we start to welcome some new staff members, or are able to extend current staff into more permanent roles. We are excited to announce that we have the following staff members joining or continuing with us to start next year:

-       Ms. Cole (grade 6), Mr. Ledene (grade 5), and Ms. Spray (k PM) in the Community English Program

-       Ms. H. Li in the Mandarin Bilingual Program (English, grade 2)

At this time, we have the majority of our staffing for next year complete. Please click here to see our currently updated staff roster for the 2023-24 school year (please note that these are subject to change).

2.     Arriving late in September? Moving Schools?

Our first day back at school for the 2023-24 school year is August 31, 2023. If your child is coming late in September due to extenuating circumstances and will not be present on the first day of school, please email the school office at MarionCarson@cbe.ab.ca with your child's full name, the reason for the absence, and the date of return.

Additionally, if your family has moved out of our catchment/area and you are moving schools, please email the school office to share this information, and for information on how to complete a transfer.

I would like to wish each and every family a safe, happy, and healthy summer break. Personally, as my first year as Principal at Marion Carson School, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support and care of your child's learning throughout the year. As a school community, it's the students, their families, and Marion Carson staff that together make this place such a welcoming environment that supports all students in being the best that they can be. -        The Scholastic Book Fair: is scheduled for the Sept 21 and 22 and will be set up in the library learning commons. The book fair is organized by the school council and run by parent volunteers in shifts. Watch for the signup genius coming to an inbox near you in September!

This volunteer position responsibilities include coordinating lunches with several different vendors throughout the year (simplified through Healthy Hunger), booking lunches 1-2 times a month and setting up the signup genius for volunteers.
