Security

Visitors & Volunteers

We require all visitors and volunteers to check-in at the school office. Visitors and volunteers will wear guest tags if they will be walking through the hallways to their child’s classroom. It is important that we can identify all persons in the building. Parents should designate a spot outside where children meet up with them and their siblings. If you are unable to find your child in the area where you agreed to meet, please come to the office and we can page the student to find out if they are in the school.

Check In / Check Out

In order to ensure we know which children are here at any given time, we have check in/check out procedures. All late students report to the office and will be given a late slip to give to their teacher. Office staff will change the absence to “late”. We also ask that when children are leaving the school early, the person collecting them comes to the office to pick the student up and signs the student out in the appropriate binder in the office. Students may not leave the school during the school day without permission from a parent/guardian and an adult staff member.

Emergency Procedures

In order to be prepared for and to better prepare for unforeseen emergencies, several kinds of practice drills will take place throughout the year. The purpose of these drills is to promote orderly actions in response to an emergency and to identify potential difficulties so that they can be addressed in future situations.

Evacuating the Building

Fire drills are held at regular intervals so that should an emergency occur the building will be evacuated quickly.  Students tampering with fire extinguishers or fire alarms will be suspended and will be reported to the Fire Marshall. It is important that students wear shoes at all times.

In the Event of a Lockdown

Certain circumstances may require a building to be put into a lockdown situation. To ensure safety and security an announcement over the public address system would prompt staff to move students to secured areas.  During this time students must remain quiet, turn off cell phones and leave them on the floor or table/desk next to them. Phones will be returned post lockdown. At the end of a lockdown an official will unlock the doors and allow students to exit.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
