Fire Drills

CBE schools are required to conduct six fire drills over the course of a school year.  Evacuation instructions are posted in each classroom. When the fire alarm sounds, these directions are to be followed immediately.

Secure Site

McKenzie Highlands School is a secure site, which means all guests will need to enter the building via the front doors only, and must use the intercom system to gain access. The front doors will be opened for student entry times, but will be locked once classes begin.

Early Entry

Students will be supervised from 15 minutes prior to and 15 minutes after the bell on regular school days. Please do not drop students off prior to 15 minutes unless they are involved in a specific teacher sponsored activity. The doors may not be open and there will be no teacher supervision.

Some sports or school activities take place in the mornings. Students involved may enter early to go to these activities. There must be a teacher on duty for all such activities. Students are requested to leave the building within 15 minutes of dismissal unless under the direct supervision of school staff for extra-curricular activities.

The school operates a number of extra-curricular activities for students, in the early morning, at noon, and after school. Students interested in participating should listen for announcements related to commencement of these activities.

Students not in regular attendance on a particular day will not be permitted to take part in extra- curricular activities on that day. This includes such activities as athletic contests, performances, and school dances.

Early Dismissal / Leaving Early

Students will not be permitted to leave outside regular school hours unless written contact has been made with the main office. A dated note signed by a parent/guardian requesting an early dismissal or an email directly from the parent / guardian should be provided to the school office that morning.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
