Admin Message - November 27, 2020

Dear Parents & Guardians,
We were happy to hear that with the new provincial restrictions we are able to continue with our in-person learning for the month of December. We recognize that some of the information coming from different sources can be confusing and we ask that you rely on what you received directly from the Calgary Board of Education. When there is an update from the provincial government, the CBE will use that information to guide our system's response and share the impact on our students and families.
We will still follow the calendar that was set out at the start of the year. At this time, our in person McKenzie Lake School students will continue to attend school until December 18.  All students will have the planned 2-week winter break.  On January 4, grade 1-4 students will return to learning in an online environment followed by kindergarten students on January 5. This will continue until Friday, January 8 with a current plan to return to in person learning on Monday, January 11. More information about online learning with be coming in the weeks ahead.  In the meantime, we highly recommend that you ensure you are familiar with your child’s Google Classroom, and practice locating assignments and submitting work, as this is the platform we will be using the first week in January for assignments and virtual teaching.
By taking time to explore your child’s Google Classroom this weekend, you will find evidence of learning this past week including:
Grade 1: Mayor’s Food Bank Drive
Grade 2: Magnets and Art Gallery visits
Grade 3: Learning about the Earth’s layers
Grade 4: Alberta’s prehistoric past art project
EES: Shapes and making sentences
Kindergarten families, this may be your first experience using Google Classroom to support your child’s learning at home.  We recommend that you go to the Classwork section and pick one of the assignments teachers have posted.  Have your child complete the assignment, and submit it online for the teacher to see.  If you have difficulties, please reach out so that we are able to support you in being comfortable with this learning platform prior to winter break.
Our Grade 1 students have had a very busy week preparing for their Social Action project that kicks off on Monday, November 30.  While learning about their community, students decided that they wanted to do something to help those in need.  After brainstorming different ways they could help our community, they decided to collect food items for the Mayor’s Food Bank Drive.  They have been busy making posters to put up around the school, and even created a few infomercials for McKenzie Lake families to enjoy at home.  (Click on each to view)

To all of our HUB families, please remember to schedule a Teacher Conference time for this coming Thursday and Friday.  This is a great opportunity for you to connect with your child’s teacher and talk about their academic progress so far this year.  Last week we had very high participation and positive feedback from families within in-school learning conferences.  The School Council also gifted each staff member with a Starbucks gift card, which teachers used to help caffeinate prior to Thursday evening conferences.  On behalf of all staff, thank you for the thoughtful treat!
